Ontario must pay social assistance benefits to a foreign migrant living illegally in Canada a tribunal has ruled in a case revealing that welfare intake workers did not conduct an immigration check of the applicant to avoid jeopardizing his ability to remain in Canada.
The Ontario Social Benefits Tribunal heard an appeal by the man who declared he had come to Canada in 1997 on a temporary work permit. Although his permit expired after four years, he never left.

A new report has found that two in five Britons believe that Muslims cannot integrate into British society, while more than half think the country’s national identity is disappearing due to “diversity”. Authored by the UK’s first counter-extremism commissioner, Sara Khan, the survey also found that over three in five people believe the “social contract” through which the public put trust in UK institutions and norms has broken down. Are we witnessing a steady unraveling of Britain’s multi-ethnic, religiously diverse democracy?
The ‘anti-racist’ rot at the heart of Britain’s police
At 9.31 on the morning of Yom Kippur last year, a man named Jihad Al-Shamie drove his Kia Picanto into the security gates of the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall, Manchester. He then got out and resumed the attack with a knife. He was wearing what looked to everyone present like a suicide belt. The first 999 call came from witnesses at the scene; it was only after firearms officers were already making their way to the synagogue that Al-Shamie himself rang emergency services to claim responsibility and pledge allegiance to Islamic State – a gesture that resolved any ambiguity about his motivation with an efficiency the subsequent police communications would struggle to match. Armed officers shot him dead within seven minutes. Melvin Cravitz, aged 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, were killed; Daulby, it later emerged, by a round from one of the responding officers, a tragedy Greater Manchester Police handled with considerably more transparency than they managed with their characterisation of the attack itself.

Books and documentaries have been dedicated to the notion that in 250 years of nationhood their greatest creation has been national parks, starting with the world’s first, Yellowstone, in 1872.
Not here in Canada. Parks Canada, the government agency charged with preserving, protecting and operating this country’s 37 national parks now calls them a “colonial injustice.”
Detectives investigating Andrew ‘will fly to the US to talk to Virginia Giuffre’s family’
Detectives investigating Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor are preparing to travel to the United States to quiz Virginia Giuffre’s family, her brother has revealed.
Thames Valley Police want to talk to relatives of Ms Giuffre, who died in April last year, about her allegations of sexual assault against the former prince.
Detectives are planning to visit her brother and sister-in-law, Sky and Amanda Roberts, in the coming weeks.
Hey, big spender: Why we need to start giving Carney a bit less benefit of the doubt
Mark Carney is committing enormous sums of public money with little explanation, in ways that neither Justin Trudeau nor most other prime ministers before him could have gotten away with.
It can be easy to look past, because of the financial gravitas that Carney carries.
Easy, too, because his spending spree this summer has mostly involved priorities — fossil-fuel infrastructure, defence — that don’t tend to invite noisy criticism from fiscally conservative chattering classes in the same way as social investments. And it’s broadly been in line with a national appetite for spending to bolster economic sovereignty and national unity, and to decrease reliance on the United States.
Carney is a very talented grifter.
2 Dead, several wounded in shooting at Salsa on St. Clair in Toronto
Toronto police are still looking for a gunman after a shooting at the popular Salsa on St. Clair street festival Saturday night.
Police say two people are dead and six others are injured in the shooting that occurred shortly after 8 p.m. on St. Clair Avenue West near Arlington Avenue.
Police have not released any descriptions of the shooter. They have asked festival attendees to leave the area.

Europe has just taken a major step toward creating the digital euro, a project that could soon open the door to leaving Europeans’ financial freedom at the mercy of Brussels.
On Thursday, July 9th, the European Parliament’s plenary adopted a text on the creation of the EU’s own CBDC (central bank digital currency), sending the file to the final stage of interinstitutional negotiations before the digital euro’s planned issuance from January 2029.
Feds promote Francophone immigration pilot in communities with high unemployment
The feds are bringing attention back to their rural immigration programs — this time to their Francophone Community Immigration Pilot (FCIP) in particular.
In a social media post, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) revisited its pilot, first announced back in early 2025, reaffirming its commitment to the francophone program in mid-2026.
US launches fresh strikes as Iran closes Strait of Hormuz
The US said it launched a fresh wave of strikes on Iran after Tehran struck a ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it closed the waterway until further notice, and the “offending” vessel was attacked after it turned off its systems and diverted from the approved route, according to state media.
US Central Command (Centcom) says it carried out the “third round of strikes this week” after the IRGC forces “blatantly attacked” a Cyprus-flagged vessel.
Exclusive satellite imagery obtained and analyzed by CNN shows signs Iran may be attempting to rebuild its nuclear facilities. The activity raises questions as to whether Iran violated the memorandum of understanding signed in late June.
