Here comes the digital commission. It will make policy, take complaints, investigate abuses, review plans and regulate companies’ collection and use of personal information, how the data of children are scraped up into AI, social-media platforms, and more.
When it was first outlined in a bill to regulate social media last week, the Digital Safety Commission sounded like a body with some flexibility to grapple with some of the thorny, evolving problems of regulating big platforms – even if some worried its mandate to protect children and others came with extensive powers.

The U.S. crackdown on drug trafficking on the border with Mexico has triggered an increase in criminal activity coming across the border from Canada, according to Markwayne Mullin, the U.S. secretary of homeland security.
Speaking to an audience in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday alongside Canada’s Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree, Mullin said law enforcement officials are seeing an increase in fentanyl trafficking from Canada, something he attributed to U.S. efforts against Mexican cartels at the southern border.

Nearly one-third of Canadians believe that antisemitism or anti-Jewish attitudes are becoming more acceptable in the country, according to a new poll.
The Leger survey, conducted on behalf of the Association for Canadian Studies, found that 31 per cent held that view, while the highest level of agreement was concentrated among university students (37 per cent), men (38 per cent) and Canadians between the ages of 18 and 34 (35 per cent). English speakers were more than twice (35 per cent) as likely to agree with the statement as opposed to just 16 per cent of Francophones.
