Critics question federal prison agency’s AI plans for inmate assessments

OTTAWA—Experts are urging Correctional Service Canada to slow down after it claimed using artificial intelligence to help create criminal profile reports for prisoners would save time and maintain accuracy, despite using just six text cases in a trial.

The warnings come as CSC considers rolling out generative AI tools that would summarize sensitive documents used to write influential assessment profiles of offenders going to prisons, as the Star has reported, raising alarm about the potential for the summaries to be tainted by AI-generated hallucinations or biases.

‘Good deal for Canada:’ PM Carney insists not a lot of profits to split with U.S. on Gordie Howe Bridge

Prime Minister Mark Carney is defending the deal brokered between Canada and the United States to open the delayed Gordie Howe International Bridge and insists the profits split with the Americans will be minimal.

“The word ‘net’ does a lot of work in this. We are sharing after Canada is paid back,” Carney said in an interview with CTV Calgary’s Tara Nelson at the Calgary Stampede on Sunday when asked about the agreement.

At competing Stampede breakfasts, 2 very different visions for Alberta emerge

It may have been the final day of the 10-day Calgary Stampede exhibition and rodeo, but two pancake breakfasts held simultaneously Sunday morning made clear the battle for the hearts and minds of Albertans is just ramping up.

At Ranchman’s Cookhouse and Dancehall, one of Calgary’s most well-known western bars, the pro-independence group Let Alberta Decide hosted a pancake breakfast, drawing hundreds. One man wore a shirt that read “Alberta First. Ottawa Last,” before grabbing a plate of eggs, sausages, pancakes and fruit.

The Vatican fired me after I claimed a word used 2,570 times in the Bible refers to alien beings

An Italian translator who says he was ‘fired by the Vatican’ for his interpretation of the original Hebrew Bible has revealed a radical reinterpretation of what God in scripture really is.

Mauro Biglino pointed to the word ‘Elohim,’ found 2,570 times in the Holy Book, which translates to ‘God’ or, in his opinion, ‘Gods.’

Biglino, an Italian scholar who worked as a biblical translator for Edizioni San Paolo, a major Catholic publishing house linked to the Vatican, suggested that instead of detailing encounters with one God, the Bible describes encounters with a group of mortal, alien beings armed with high technology.

Companies ‘no longer in the wait and see mode’ as experts predict manufacturing exodus from Canada

OTTAWA – In a week that saw Toyota announce it’s moving some production from Mexico to the U.S., and a new KPMG survey finding four in 10 Canadian manufacturers have moved operations to the U.S. or are planning to do so, an international trade lawyer expects bigger manufacturing moves like Toyota’s on the horizon for Canada.

On Monday, Toyota said it will build a new US$3.6B plant in San Antonio, Texas, and move some production of its Tacoma pickup truck out of its Mexico plant over a four-year period.

U.S. President Donald Trump credited his country’s tariffs for the move, musing that it will be the largest car plant in the world.
