Three men convicted in the brutal murders of two Abbotsford seniors are challenging how long they should serve in prison before being considered for parole under the so-called faint hope clause.
“The faint hope clause makes no sense to me. It’s ridiculous,” said Brian Barthel, the son-in-law of victims Arnold and Joanne De Jong.
Kushveer Toor, Abhijeet Singh and Gurkaran Singh were convicted earlier this year in the 2022 first-degree murders of the De Jongs, who were attacked during a home invasion.
How Canada’s border offices are facing a major security gap
Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is woefully behind when it comes to protecting its only facilities at airports, ports of entry and offices from security threat and risk, an audit found.
A recent effort to catch up on that work has exposed major shortcomings: Unauthorized people walked into secure areas through “piggybacking.” Surveillance cameras were missing or too blurry to be useful to guard the facilities. And official stamps used to process travellers and goods at ports of entry couldn’t be accounted for.

You could go to prison, lose your support and accommodation, and it will affect your asylum claim.” Other topics covered included domestic violence and respect for others in public. It’s a quick nine pages. Indeed, Canada could probably make use of such a leaflet.
Pending applications for proof of Canadian citizenship stood at roughly 56,000 in April. By May, they had reached 70,400. Today they sit at 121,800, and the posted processing time has doubled since spring, from 12 to 25 months. This is the fastest-growing channel of potential newcomers to Canada, and it appears nowhere in the immigration levels plan the Carney government cites as proof it has the file under control.
CALGARY — A viral video showing a man celebrating what he describes as his deportation from Canada has sparked attention online, with the creator saying he plans to bring more immigrants back to the country and “make it even worse.”
The video appears to have been posted by Mississauga-based content creator Unver Malick. His social-media accounts contain multiple videos centred around the theme of deportation from Canada.

The Abbotsford Police Department, in a statement Wednesday, said authorities have contacted people who have posted the video in order to obtain more information.
“Incidents of this nature are unacceptable and can have a significant impact on our parks, waterways, and community spaces,” the statement from the department said.

Another Sikh Canadian activist has been issued a “duty to warn” letter, casting further doubt on the Carney government’s claims that it has dealt with the issue of Indian government foreign interference and transnational repression.
Inderjeet Singh Gosal says he received the letter on Friday, Aug. 14, after RCMP contacted him by phone in Caledon, Ont.
Duty to warn letters are issued by police when they possess credible intelligence that there is a threat to the life of a citizen. They typically do not provide information on the nature of the threat.

Migrant advocates are calling for an inquiry after immigration checks were carried out last week on international students protesting in Calgary about being denied the right to work in Canada after completing their studies.
For weeks, international students have been protesting in northeast Calgary about their inability to obtain postgraduation work permits. Similar protests involving Indian students have been held in Edmonton.
