In February, as a former director in Stephen Harper’s PMO, I was invited to Ottawa for the unveiling of his official portrait. It was a lovely and fitting occasion. As is customary, the current prime minister, Mark Carney, was also in attendance and gave gracious remarks.
Watching the two men share a stage, I was struck by how similar their brands are. When I attend focus groups, the words people use to describe Carney are strong, smart, dependable, safe, and economically credible.
Those are the same words people used to describe Stephen Harper 15 years ago. Many will even tell you, unprompted, that Carney is governing the country like a conservative.

Then, on the heels of Freedom’s announcement, Royce White, a 6-foot-8, 270-pound former Houston Rockets first-round pick, announced similar plans.

There is no need for urgency in Canada’s efforts to persuade the U.S. to refrain from imposing its latest planned tariffs on Canadian goods that are to take effect on Aug. 19.
No trade deal is better than a bad one that Canada would be stuck with for many years, long after U.S. President Donald Trump has left office.
A tariff regime is difficult to unwind once it is enacted. Former U.S. president Joe Biden left in place many of the tariffs that Trump imposed in his first presidential term.

For decades, the Iranian regime has guarded its strategic intentions behind ambiguity, denials and carefully calibrated statements. Its current strategy has now become unusually explicit. Recent comments attributed to Majid Shakeri, an adviser to Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, suggest that Tehran believes its path to victory is not necessarily through defeating the United States militarily, but through managing the confrontation until President Donald Trump’s term ends in January 2029. Shakeri described the approach as maintaining a state of neither war nor peace and exercising “strategic patience” and “getting along with him [President Trump] until his term ends.” It is a strategy that Washington and its allies should take seriously.
The RCMP’s chief officer in British Columbia has been relieved of his duties in connection with unspecified allegations dating back to between 2016 and 2018.
Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald was removed from the position after the allegations were recently brought to the force’s attention, RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme said in a statement.
“We are treating this matter with the attention and diligence it requires,” Duheme said, noting that the investigation is ongoing. He said no further details would be provided at this time.

Toronto police have charged a taxi driver with sexual assault.
Police said they received a call for a sexual assault in the area of Market Street and The Esplanade on Friday.
A shooting involving multiple suspects and five people shot at Virginia State University prompted a campus lockdown and police investigation early Saturday.
It happened near the university’s Quad Annexes, where campus police and Chesterfield County officers discovered five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside campus dormitories. Officers responded just before 1:30 a.m. and the lockdown was lifted at about 9 a.m., county police said.

Since peaking in 2021, the median income hasn’t made much progress after inflation—except for older Canadians. While older demographics continue to see their real (inflation-adjusted) incomes hit new highs, younger ones saw their incomes peak nearly half a century ago. Seriously.
