Because right now, it is going nowhere.
OTTAWA – Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling on his MPs to continue to “fight for the jobs of Canadians” as some are privately expressing concerns over his polling numbers, the current electoral prospects of the party and their own seats.
“My job is to continue to fight for the common people, fight for affordability, and to fight for safe streets for our country, and that’s what I will continue to do,” Poilievre said when speaking to reporters in Vancouver on Sunday as he called for the federal government to extend the pause on the federal gas tax until Canada Day 2027.
In February, as a former director in Stephen Harper’s PMO, I was invited to Ottawa for the unveiling of his official portrait. It was a lovely and fitting occasion. As is customary, the current prime minister, Mark Carney, was also in attendance and gave gracious remarks.
Watching the two men share a stage, I was struck by how similar their brands are. When I attend focus groups, the words people use to describe Carney are strong, smart, dependable, safe, and economically credible.
Those are the same words people used to describe Stephen Harper 15 years ago. Many will even tell you, unprompted, that Carney is governing the country like a conservative.
