For three days, Canada and the United States (US) appeared to have a trade deal. On August 19, President Donald Trump said they probably had one. Canada’s trade minister, Dominic LeBlanc, said the two countries were “very close,” while US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said negotiators had reached an agreement. Then, late on August 21, Prime Minister Mark Carney pulled Canada’s negotiators out of Washington and killed it.

When President Donald Trump was nearly assassinated in Butler, Pennsylvania in July of 2024, the moment was assumed (perhaps naively) by some on the right to be a watershed moment. The egregious display of political violence that was the culmination of a years-long assassination prep campaign against the president and more broadly, Republicans, was certainly the last, so many thought.
Pending applications for proof of Canadian citizenship stood at roughly 56,000 in April. By May, they had reached 70,400. Today they sit at 121,800, and the posted processing time has doubled since spring, from 12 to 25 months. This is the fastest-growing channel of potential newcomers to Canada, and it appears nowhere in the immigration levels plan the Carney government cites as proof it has the file under control.

Reports today suggest Andy Burnham has been invited to send ministers to cross-party talks on a private member’s bill which would make marriage and sexual intercourse between first cousins illegal. Lord David Alton of Liverpool, a prominent member of the House of Lords in the UK, recently condemned the 2018 provisional agreement between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as a “deal with the devil,” highlighting its complicity in “gross violations” of religious freedom and its resultant betrayal of the underground Church in the nation.
“In the case of the Chinese Communist regime, it is making a deal with the devil—a regime that has committed genocide against Uyghur Muslims and persecutes Tibetan Buddhists, Falun Gong practitioners, and Chinese Christians,” Alton said.
Canada and the US were once great friends, allies and trading partners. They had disagreements on various domestic and international matters, wars and military conflicts. They didn’t always see eye-to-eye on trade negotiations related to the auto sector, acid rain, softwood lumber and more. Nevertheless, the two countries always found a way to return to the same page.
Yet this historic and economic relationship has now been torn apart. Canada and the US are engulfed in a full-fledged trade war, and there’s no end in sight.
