It will take close to a decade before the submarines Canada wants to buy will have any in-the-sea impact on the country’s security.
But Prime Minister Mark Carney will nonetheless get a boost from Monday’s announcement immediately upon arrival Tuesday for the NATO Leaders’ Summit.

A new 2026 annual report, “Scapegoats: Rights Violations Against Christians in Iran,” published by Article18 in partnership with Open Doors, Christian Solidarity Worldwide and Middle East Concern, sheds an alarming light on the persecutions of Christians in Iran.
According to the report, at least 21 Christians have received custodial sentences in 2025 related to their alleged involvement in the distribution of Bibles in Iran, in addition to other forms of punishment, such as fines, exile, and social deprivation.

Is Canada a country that cannot build? Increasingly, there seems to be a case for that sad sentiment. Housing targets are set, only to be constantly missed. Subways and tramways suffer endless delays and budget blowouts. And despite decades of talk, we lack the infrastructure to get resources to the coast and international markets, which is especially crushing in the current trade war.
That inability to build doesn’t come out of nowhere. It arises out of a broken process. As yet one more example: last week, the federal government directed Alto — the high-speed rail project from Toronto to Quebec City — to “consider” adding a station in Kingston. It’s a small but illuminating example of Canada’s problems.
LOS ANGELES – Law enforcement in the United States, Canada, and Europe have arrested 24 defendants – 11 of them in California – connected to three India-based transnational organized crime groups charged with a litany of criminal acts, including the assassination in Canada in 2023 of a prominent Indian political and religious figure, the Justice Department announced today.
Today’s law enforcement action – “Operation Hard Ball” – is the result of a years-long federal investigation into Indian crime syndicates that engage in racketeering, targeted killings, shootings, extortion, the trafficking of bulk quantities of narcotics across international borders, and other crimes around the world whose impact is especially felt in the Indian diaspora.
In total, 37 defendants – including two defendants who ran their global criminal syndicates while imprisoned in India – are charged across three indictments unsealed today. Those arrested in the United States – 11 in California, one in Indiana, and one in Georgia – are expected to make their initial appearances today in federal court.
A new survey shows trade tensions have some Canadian manufacturers deciding to move production south of the border or delay capital investments.
KPMG Canada said on Tuesday that 42 per cent of Canadian manufacturing companies indicated they have or are considering moving production to the United States. Of those considering relocating, 77 per cent expect to make the transition within the next two years.
Anamika Gadia, partner and national leader of industrial markets at KPMG Canada, said domestic manufacturers have shown resilience over the last year, “but resilience certainly has its limits.”

A group of prominent Canadians (Liberal Left Rent Seekers) is urging the federal government to support plans for a voluntary National Youth Service program that would include basic military training.
Engage Canada submitted a proposal to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance in May, seeking support to develop the program. Under the proposal, young people aged 18-25 would complete the military training before serving in areas such as emergency preparedness, climate resilience and community service.

NATO has made it official, announcing Tuesday that it intends to acquire up to 10 Saab-manufactured GlobalEye early warning surveillance aircraft in a plan that has important implications for Canada.
Secretary General Mark Rutte said at the outset of this year’s leader’s summit in Ankara, Turkey, that the Western military alliance will open formal negotiations with the Swedish company in order to secure the planes.
The alliance had previously signalled it was looking at the high-tech jet as a replacement for NATO’s existing fleet of aging Boeing E-3 AWACs.
