Students fed up with woke culture at universities launch free-speech group to embrace wide-ranging opinions amid fears debate is being stifled

Students are launching a nationwide project to champion free speech in universities over fears that debate is being stifled in favour of woke culture.

It aims to address a free-speech crisis on campuses and encourage the young to embrace wide-ranging opinions without the fear of saying the ‘wrong’ thing.

The news comes after a survey found more than a quarter of students censored their own views on politics or ethical matters, and 40 per cent believed their careers would be harmed if they expressed their true thoughts.

The ‘Woke’ Purge Has Begun

Cancel culture doesn’t exist, they say. And yet with the flick of a switch, billionaire capitalists voted for by precisely nobody have just silenced a man who is still the democratically elected president of the United States. With the push of a button in their vast temples to technology, the new capitalist oligarchs of Silicon Valley have prevented a man who won the second largest vote in the history of the American republic just two months ago — 74million votes — from engaging with his supporters (and critics) in the new public square of the internet age.

The Wokest News Stories of 2020

When editors in 2020 weren’t being fired in bunches, they were taking aim at everything from Beethoven to mermaids to skyscrapers

The year 2020 will be remembered in the real world for a terrifying pandemic, mass unemployment, a nationwide protest movement, and a historically uninspiring presidential race. The year in media, meanwhile, was marked by grotesque factual scandals, journalist-cheered censorship, and an accelerating newsroom mania for political groupthink that was equal parts frightening and ridiculous.

Woke BBC Viewers Deride ‘Grease‘ as ‘Racist, Rapey, and Homophobic‘

Some UK viewers who caught the BBC’s airing of the classic hit 1970s musical Grease over Christmas were aghast at its content, slamming the John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John-starring musical as an affront to their sensibilities.

Forty-two years after its cinema release, the movie was met with damning critiques from some calling it “misogynistic,” “rapey,” and encouraging “slut-shaming” amongst a host of other putdowns.

BBC Says Jesus Was a Black Palestinian

As I noted in discussing Hilaria Baldwin yesterday, to be white today is to be evil, as far as the Western intelligentsia is concerned. And so it was not a big surprise when, a week before Christmas, the BBC World Service radio show Heart and Soul aired a segment called “Black Jesus,” and has since then rerun it more than once. It’s more “realistic,” the BBC assures us, to see Jesus as a “darker skinned Palestinian.” Realistic or no, it’s certainly in line with the mythology of the age, in which only those who are darker skinned could possibly be righteous. In such a context, how could the one whom Christians worship as the Savior of the world have anything but the darkest possible skin?

Viewers slam BBC for ‘forcing politics’ into New Year’s Eve that featured ‘woke’ BLM fist salutes, and a climate change lecture – while NO ONE sang Auld Lang Syne

Many watching on TV were outraged and said the show was ‘ruined by politics’ after Thames bridges were turned blue and yellow in a tribute to the EU as the UK finally left and 300 drones made the shape of a BLM fist and a turtle with Africa on its shell during a climate change lecture by Sir David Attenborough – but ended with no Auld Lang Syne.

The BBC helped with the planning of the broadcast, which the Mayor’s office said: ‘Looked ahead in hope to 2021, including sending a message to European Londoners that they will always have a home in our city’.

Database will name 6,500 British investors in slave trade: Academics are compiling new ‘dictionary’ that is set to expose more slavery links with modern firms

Database will name 6,500 British investors in slave trade: Academics are compiling new ‘dictionary’ that is set to expose more slavery links with modern firms

A taxpayer-funded database naming and shaming 6,500 British investors and companies with links to the slave trade is to be published, it was revealed today.

The Dictionary of British Slave Traders is a project supported by £1million in government funding using research by British historians and experts after a year where Black Lives Matter supporters have toppled statues and defaced monuments linked to the slave trade across the country.

The database – the largest of its kind in history – will include well known names such as the Duke of Chandos, Britain’s first Prime Minister Robert Walpole as well as brewery giant Greene King and insurer Lloyd’s of London.

The year the ruling class got woke

Identity politics has become the new secular religion. We need more heretics.

For me, the defining image of 2020 was also the funniest: that of Democratic lawmakers in the US taking the knee, in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, draped in Ghanaian kente cloth.

Watching thoroughly establishment politicians, House speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer to the fore, literally kneeling before the new woke politics was striking. It provoked so many questions, not least if Pelosi and Schumer (80 and 70 respectively) would be able to rise again unassisted.

Wokestradamus? Parody Twitter account ‘Titania McGrath’ perfectly predicted the latest social justice battles

In a bizarre case of life imitating art, a parody Twitter account making fun of the woke movement ended up predicting exactly what that movement would do. Does the line between satire and reality even exist any more?

‘Titania McGrath’ doesn’t exist, and is a creation of Spiked columnist Andrew Doyle. Yet her Twitter account, which parodies and ridicules modern society’s obsession with political correctness, has fooled the unaware before, even earning a ban from Twitter after a biting send-up of critical theory in which she argued doctors were “bullying and dehumanizing” sick people – i.e. “those who do not conform to their perceptions of “‘wellness’” – and thus medical science should be banned as an oppressive, cisnormative, patriarchal construct.

The Politics of Affliction

The Politics of Affliction

New York City’s progressive leaders apparently believe that it is their mission to disrupt the comfort of their constituents.

There was no shortage of suffering in New York in 2020. With the Covid-19 pandemic, economic hardship, rioting, and street violence, there’s been plenty of misery to go around. But according to some prominent elected officials and bureaucrats, the fun’s only getting started. They seem to see it as part of their job—really, their duty—to make sure that New Yorkers feel the pain.
