Poilievre urges tax cuts to make diesel fuel more affordable, ensure future supplies

OTTAWA – Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is pitching a plan to cut federal taxes on diesel fuel and help ensure Canada has affordable supplies of the fuel in the future.

Poilievre says Canada already produces enough diesel to meet national demand, but transportation bottlenecks leave some regions dependent on U.S. imports.

He proposes eliminating all tax on diesel sales until at least Canada Day by extending the full fuel excise tax cut until July 1 of next year and removing the GST from the purchase of fuel.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Iran was prepared for a “doomsday war” after President Donald Trump rejected its ceasefire offer.

Trump publicly confirmed that he rejected an Iranian ceasefire offer on Saturday, one that offered a halt on attacks on Strait of Hormuz shipping and a resumption of nuclear talks in return for the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade. In an appearance on NBC News’s Meet the Press, Araghchi was asked about a report from the Wall Street Journal claiming that Trump may seek a return to intensive bombing after the midterm elections. In response to the two developments, Araghchi said Iran was confident in its position in the case of a resumption of the war.

The Correctional Service of Canada has confirmed that paper straws will soon be distributed in federal prisons to facilitate safe snorting of drugs.

This week a social media post included photos of a memo distributed to Corrections staff stating that paper straws were being newly “introduced” for “safer snorting” and “intended for inhaling substances in powdered form or inhaling vapour from heated substances.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney warned that pivoting our economy away from the U.S. would come at a cost to Canadians and the latest numbers show that’s true.

An Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report released last week downgraded Canada’s expected economic growth by 25% for this year and by almost the same amount in 2027 – 23.53% – compared to its last report in June.

Counter-terror police investigate Iran link to suspected RAF base bomb plot

Counter-terrorism police are investigating whether Iran was behind a suspected bomb plot targeting an RAF base used by US forces.

Five men have been arrested under the Explosives Act and on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act after three suspicious vans were spotted travelling towards RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire in the early hours of Sunday.

Police received a call at around 12.45am reporting three suspicious vehicles apparently heading towards the air base, prompting armed officers to respond. The five men were arrested in the nearby Whelford area.
