The populist far-right, anti-immigration Alternative für Deutschland has emerged as the winner in a crucial state election in Germany, exit polls have projected, but it remains unclear as to whether it will be able to form a government and become the first far-right party to gain power at regional or parliament level since the second world war.

Initial exit polls showed the party to have secured 44.5% of the vote, decisively ahead of the Christian Democrats of the chancellor, Friedrich Merz, in a contest that was being followed across the world.

Exploring the murky depths of my laptop this last week, I came upon a provocative pamphlet from about a decade ago, perhaps.

It’s provocative in a very good sense. The author, Dr. Tawfik Hamid, wrote passionately about the topic at hand, a passion that was palpable. Hamid is an Egyptian MD who identifies himself as a moderate Muslim. In the pamphlet, he was making the case that we must see what people mean when they invoke the name of Islam. Hamid found the need to do that, having joined an Egyptian jihadist group in the Eighties, which he then left as the result of the moral awakening that led him to be a Muslim reformer.

Amazon Boeing 767 jet crashes at Miami airport

Terrifying footage showed an Amazon Boeing 767 jet smoldering on a road outside of Miami International Airport after it overran the runway and crashed, injuring multiple people and damaging vehicles in its path.

The clip, obtained by NBC 6, showed the huge cargo plane askew across the roadway as huge clouds of black smoke billowed up from the wreckage on Sunday afternoon.

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is woefully behind when it comes to protecting its only facilities at airports, ports of entry and offices from security threat and risk, an audit found.

A recent effort to catch up on that work has exposed major shortcomings: Unauthorized people walked into secure areas through “piggybacking.” Surveillance cameras were missing or too blurry to be useful to guard the facilities. And official stamps used to process travellers and goods at ports of entry couldn’t be accounted for.

Looks like CBSA has a DEI problem.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Appeals from American tourism organizations seemed to be everywhere Josh Loewen looked over the last year. Billboards and banners proclaimed a state or city’s love for Canada. Online and social media ads offered special deals for travelers from north of the border.

As a Vancouver resident and marketing executive himself, Loewen said he understands the conciliatory overtures. The number of Canadians traveling to the United States plunged after President Donald Trump returned to office with remarks about making Canada the 51st state. An acrimonious trade war between the two countries now is threatening to reinforce the informal boycott just as it appeared to be easing slightly.

They forget to mention that Vegas is not the bargain it was. Not for Americans not for anyone.

Canadians are also crushed by taxes, that never helps.

Ukraine is considering dismantling its ban on pornography as lawmakers seek to bring a large online adult industry into the tax system and redirect millions of dollars toward the country’s wartime needs.

Yaroslav Zhelezniak, an opposition lawmaker who chairs Parliament’s finance committee, estimates legalization could generate as much as $25 million a year, according to The Wall Street Journal.

He says that would be enough to finance about 30,000 drones.
