Toronto child poverty rates rise for third straight year: ‘How can it be acceptable?’

Sharma Queiser has researched the social issues that Torontonians face for more than a decade, authoring reports that aim to raise awareness and improve lives.

Every few years, she’s been part of the team that puts together a report card on child and family poverty for Social Planning Toronto.

But co-authoring the report this time was different for her. It’s the first time the report has come out since she became a parent. The team found that for the third consecutive year, child poverty rates have risen in Toronto, disproportionately affecting families who are immigrants, racialized or have a single parent in their households.

This article suggests Canada do a better job crafting a beneficial to citizens immigration policy rather than using it to feed a vote buying machine.

Trump says Iran shot down US helicopter and vows to respond

President Donald Trump has accused Iran of shooting down a US helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz and vowed to respond to the attack out of “necessity”.

Two crew members of the Apache helicopter that crashed following the attack were rescued by an American sea drone, the Pentagon said in a statement.

“There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack.”

‘Free Healthcare‘: Emergency Room Waits Kill 300-a-Week in UK

‘Free Healthcare‘: Emergency Room Waits Kill 300-a-Week in UK

Over 300 people died every week while waiting for treatment in British emergency rooms in 2025, where deadly overcrowding in hospitals is said to have been normalised, with half a million people forced to wait over 24 hours in a year.

Analysis of official government data by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine estimates that over 1,300 people died a month in Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments last year because they were forced to wait too long for treatment. The 15,860 avoidable deaths over the course of 2025 is ten times higher than a decade earlier, and is said to be a result of British hospitals where overcrowding has been normalised.

I wonder what the rate is in Canada.

Jamie Sarkonak: New Brunswick’s plan to add an Indigenous tier of justice to the courts

The First Nations of New Brunswick are currently fighting for title to the entire province, but that hasn’t stopped the local legislature from offering up its courts for their use.

Last week, the N.B. Liberals tabled Bill 50, “An Act Respecting the Enforcement of First Nations Laws and the Prosecution of Offences under First Nations Laws.” It would designate New Brunswick courts as the place to enforce First Nations bylaws.

Surveillance drones deployment on US’s Great Lakes raises data collection fears

Surveillance drones deployment on US’s Great Lakes raises data collection fears

The Great Lakes have rarely ever been considered a hotbed of illicit drug activity or center for illegal immigration.

But that hasn’t stopped US government agencies and the company behind surveillance sailing drones from treating the region as such. The US Coast Guard recently announced it has launched an armada of at least six sailing drones in the Great Lakes this summer in an attempt to, in part, “track illicit activity”.

At 33ft long, Saildrone Inc’s Voyager surveillance vessels can operate for 100 days at a time without needing servicing. The California-headquartered company claims the drones can operate for months without refueling and can “track vessels across wide maritime regions”.

As Allies Tie China’s Police Ministry to Overseas Repression, RCMP Refuses to Name Its Partner Agency

OTTAWA — In January 2026, the RCMP signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Public Security (MPS), renewing a framework for police cooperation with the same arm of the Chinese state that prosecutors in two democracies have now tied, in open court, to the surveillance and intimidation of dissidents on foreign soil — and, in one of those jurisdictions, to a notorious triad. It is a development that corroborates recent United States Treasury sanctions and Washington Post reporting pointing to deepening ties between Beijing’s security services and transnational Chinese mafia proxies.

Billions in aid handed to terrorists and criminals

Billions in aid handed to terrorists and criminals

Terrorists, hostile states and gangsters have been given more than £28bn of taxpayers’ money, including through aid payments, according to a secret government report.

The Telegraph can reveal details of a dossier showing that billions of pounds went to organised crime, with millions going to Russia and Islamic State.

It demonstrates that foreign aid and Covid relief loans were appropriated on a vast scale by Britain’s enemies, with the money beyond reach and those who took it unpunished.

Bet that Canada was robbed blind as well.

Why families with small children are leaving Toronto and Montreal for Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa

Why families with small children are leaving Toronto and Montreal for Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa

Toronto and Montreal are embarking on a period of mass school closings, driven not by falling birth rates or changing political priorities but by a failure to build child-friendly homes.

They risk joining the ranks of Vancouver, where fewer than one in 25 residents is under the age of five. Communities begin losing schools when the number of students leaving a system exceeds the number entering, and the number of young children in a city is a key early warning indicator.

Trump’s latest Iran war prediction: US in ‘final throes’ of ‘very good strong, powerful deal’

Trump’s latest Iran war prediction: US in ‘final throes’ of ‘very good strong, powerful deal’

TRUMP: ‘NO STICKING POINTS’: To hear President Donald Trump tell it, a deal to open the Strait of Hormuz and bar Iran from ever having nuclear weapons is just days away. By one count, Trump has made similar statements more than three dozen times in the past few months. However, speaking to reporters at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York last night, Trump insisted negotiations were about to conclude with a “powerful deal.”

“We’re in the final throes of what will be a very, very good deal that will not allow in any way, shape, or form nuclear weapons, et cetera,” Trump said after watching game three of the NBA Finals in New York. “And the Strait will open up right away. It’ll open up immediately upon signing, which could be in two or three days.”

Or as the Toronto Sun’s Brian Lilley put it, “celebrate his government’s total failure on affordability.”

US adds China EV manufacturer BYD to list of firms with alleged Chinese military ties

US adds China EV manufacturer BYD to list of firms with alleged Chinese military ties

The US has added several major firms from China, including e-commerce giant Alibaba and electric car maker BYD, to a list of companies said to have ties with the Chinese military.

The Department of Defense’s list aims to alert American organisations to the risks of doing business with the Chinese firms, but their inclusion does not mean they are immediately sanctioned.

The Chinese embassy in the US told the BBC the list was “discriminatory” and said firms from China have strictly complied with the laws abroad.

This should make Carney happy.

‘I was suspended from police for questioning Islam’

A Christian police support officer was sacked after he asked questions about Islam in a diversity training session.

Luke Salmons lost his job as a police community support officer (PCSO) with the North Yorkshire force and was barred from policing after a conversation about Gaza with a Muslim officer.

He later won an appeal against his dismissal but has never received an apology from the force where he said a “culture of fear” existed among officers who were terrified of being fired for saying the wrong thing.

Michael Higgins: Archeologist’s ‘critical theory’ PhD thesis explains everything about Kamloops ‘graves’

Five years of national angst and anger over the “discovery” of “graves” at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School was driven by an archeological report by a self-proclaimed activist archeologist and critical theory advocate Sarah Beaulieu. Her PhD thesis, completed in 2019, glorified her social warrior/critical theory credentials.

In her thesis, Archaeology of Internment at the Morrissey WWI Camp, insight into Beaulieu’s philosophy is revealed in chapter two under the headings “Critical Theory” and “Applications of Critical Theory within Modern Conflict Archaeology.”

Karmelo Anthony jurors shocked to their core over ghastly autopsy photos — and accused killer refuses to look

Jury members gasped in horror after being shown never-before-seen photos of Austin Metcalf’s heart as Karmelo Anthony’s trial continued.

Metcalf, 17, was stabbed once in the chest. The knife pierced through his bone in the center of his chest and punctured the right side of his heart, a medical examiner testified on Saturday.

Jurors were shown a photo of the ‘gapping’ two-inch stab wound that ‘completely went through the heart wall.’
