Zohran Mamdani Has an Historically Illiterate Take on Soccer

History isn’t the Left’s strong suit. From the 1619 Project to the Civil War to things that happened last week, they don’t have a grasp on the past because — oftentimes — it’s inconvenient to their present and future. With the U.S., Canada, and Mexico slated to host matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is taking a hands-on approach to the event as only a socialist could. Way back in January, he vowed to make tickets to the upcoming match at MetLife Stadium ‘affordable’ for New Yorkers.

John Ivison: The disturbingly powerful allure of Avi Lewis’s ‘Gen Z socialism’

When Avi Lewis was elected leader of the New Democratic Party just over two months ago, he issued a boast that was almost Trumpian in its braggadocio.

“Canada, mark your calendar. The NDP comeback starts now,” he said.

But it turns out, he was right. A Liaison Strategies poll released on Monday had NDP support at 15 per cent, with the party leading among 18–34 year olds. To put that in context, the NDP won the support of 1.2-million voters in the 2025 election. If a vote were held tomorrow, with a similar turnout, at this level of polling, the party would win nearly three million votes.

Cuba Is Prepared to Be a Second Iran

Cuba Is Prepared to Be a Second Iran

Trump has said that he can “take Cuba anytime.” But if he expects a walkover like Venezuela, he should think again. While Cuba’s proximity to the U.S. and collapsed economy should make it an easier target, its totalitarian system better resembles that of Iran, whose resistance to U.S. military and economic pressures may be inspiring Cuba’s besieged communists to do the same and possibly coordinate their moves with the IRGC.

Wanted in India, Free in the US, Canada; Transnational Gangs Thrive

They were wanted men in India. They reached the United States and Canada on student visas and asylum claims, and from quiet addresses in California and British Columbia they rebuilt the criminal empires they had left behind. American and Canadian police are only now catching up.

In December 2023, a businessman in India picked up a video call and found himself looking at one of the most feared crime bosses in the country. The caller did something strange for a man who had spent years avoiding the law. He let his face be seen. Pay, he told the businessman, or die

The tyranny of Pride is coming to an end

The tyranny of Pride is coming to an end

Most institutions duly obey, especially progressive-run councils with delusions of grandeur, and amoral corporate bodies who will adopt any fashionable cause if they think there’s money in it. But not this year. This June, some are refusing to signal their obeisance.

The newly-elected Reform council in Gateshead has announced that it will stop flying the Pride flag outside its civic centre and no longer fund future Pride events.

CBC calls for compassion towards Humboldt’s killer driver, skepticism for acquitted NHL goalie

VANCOUVER — The Canadian Broadcast Corporation is drawing criticism, yet again, for its editorial decision making — this time for encouraging compassion towards a man ordered deported after he pleaded guilty to killing 16 people, while suggesting a man acquitted of sexual assault should be spared the opportunity of a fresh start.

France and Germany abandon joint project to build European fighter jet

France and Germany have concluded that the companies involved in building a joint fighter jet will not be able to reach an agreement and have abandoned the project, officials in Berlin have said in a blow to Europe’s common defence efforts.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, and the German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, had “reached the shared assessment that the companies will not be able to come together”, an official told Agence France-Presse. “They acknowledge this reality.”

Germany couldn’t agree to the French demand for an automated surrender shutdown.

Toronto child poverty rates rise for third straight year: ‘How can it be acceptable?’

Sharma Queiser has researched the social issues that Torontonians face for more than a decade, authoring reports that aim to raise awareness and improve lives.

Every few years, she’s been part of the team that puts together a report card on child and family poverty for Social Planning Toronto.

But co-authoring the report this time was different for her. It’s the first time the report has come out since she became a parent. The team found that for the third consecutive year, child poverty rates have risen in Toronto, disproportionately affecting families who are immigrants, racialized or have a single parent in their households.

This article suggests Canada do a better job crafting a beneficial to citizens immigration policy rather than using it to feed a vote buying machine.

Trump says Iran shot down US helicopter and vows to respond

President Donald Trump has accused Iran of shooting down a US helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz and vowed to respond to the attack out of “necessity”.

Two crew members of the Apache helicopter that crashed following the attack were rescued by an American sea drone, the Pentagon said in a statement.

“There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack.”
