Monday’s inflation numbers showed that prices of food purchased in stores rose by 4.3 per cent over the past year, compared with 3.1 per cent for nonfood items. A confluence of pressures is creating a perfect storm for further rapid price hikes.

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney said a deal on CUSMA will ultimately happen between him and U.S. President Donald Trump, despite teams of negotiators on both sides working through trade issues.

A prominent gun control advocacy group is repeating its call for an immediate end to new sales of SKS rifles following the deadly shooting in Montreal on Monday.
Although police have not publicly confirmed which type of firearm was used by the suspect in the shooting that left Montreal police officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane and civilian Michel Mizrahi dead, Radio-Canada has confirmed it was an SKS rifle — a semi-automatic rifle of Russian origin that dates back to the 1950s.
In a media statement Thursday, the group PolySeSouvient urged the federal Liberals to halt new sales of SKS models, saying it would close an obvious gap and send a clear signal.
Let’s set aside the basic moral argument and my aversion to people being given things they haven’t earned, which you may also share. Over time, I’ve actually softened my stance on this. It simply isn’t within everyone’s power—reasonable power—to be in good shape. A child has no control over what its parents feed it. The decision to raise a child on a diet of ultra-processed food, starting with formula instead of breastmilk, can essentially set it up to fail for life. An overweight or obese child raised on ultra-processed food will continue eating ultra-processed food as an adult and face problems around eating that a child raised on proper home-cooked food will not.
In the UK, the average two- to five-year-old now derives two-thirds of his or her daily calories from ultra-processed food. The U.S. isn’t far behind that dismal figure.

The Reio family was supposed to be living the Canadian dream. After a lifetime of hard work, they had saved money to buy a small lot with a modest home on the shores of Lake Erie.
