WASHINGTON — More than a year before the pandemic, in the autumn of 2018, coronavirus material was carried covertly out of a People’s Liberation Army medical academy toward the Minnesota laboratory of a federally funded virologist, a man named Fang Li, who was permitted to work on “bat coronavirus DNA.”
In late 2025, Harvard Kennedy School professor Sandra Susan Smith expressed skepticism about the Trump administration’s decision to target a dozen American cities—including Oakland, Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles, New York, Portland, and Washington, D.C.—for temporary federal law-enforcement and National Guard deployments aimed at reducing crime and restoring order. Smith wondered “about what the consequences for deploying federalized forces are, especially for black and brown people in the cities that have been targeted for intervention.” She continued: “What seems clear to me is that the costs that are associated with this federal intervention will far outweigh the meager and very short-term benefits.”
One of the targeted cities was Memphis.
Canada’s premiers raised a glass to internal trade last week. A 23-year-old man from Aurora has been charged after allegedly driving through a playground and walking paths that were packed with children at a park in Ajax earlier this month.
Durham Regional Police said a call came in shortly before 6:30 p.m. on July 18 for a white Toyota sedan that was driving dangerously through Rotary Park on Lake Driveway West.
“The suspect vehicle drove through the playground, splash pad, and walking paths, which were filled with pedestrians, including young children,” police allege in a news release on Monday.
