It’s no longer in the public consciousness, but domestic terrorism was very much a thing in the United States and Europe during the 1960s and 1970s.

There is no one hard count, but in those two decades, about 20,000 bombings happened in the United States, with actual revolutionary groups trying to overthrow the United States government.

A Toronto man found not criminally responsible for the unprovoked killing of an off-duty firefighter at a café in 2013 who “continues to represent a significant threat to the safety of the public” has moved out of hospital, only has to check in with his handlers every two weeks, and is now living in a residential facility that’s a quick walk or bus ride from the city’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

Ukrainian Canadian Congress pushes Ottawa to ban Soviet hammer and sickle symbol

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress is urging Parliament to outlaw public displays of the Soviet hammer and sickle, arguing the Communist emblem should be treated as a hate symbol alongside Nazi and terrorist insignia already targeted in federal legislation.

In submissions to the Senate human rights committee, the Congress said the symbol continues to represent both historic atrocities committed under the Soviet Union and modern-day Russian aggression against Ukraine.

I get it but half of Ottawa probably longs for the return of the Soviet Inion.

US government releases UFO sighting reports – ‘Orbs swarming in all directions’

The Pentagon released scores of UFO files on Friday with descriptions of reported sightings of orbs, discs and fireballs spanning 80 years.

Witnesses described seeing “green orbs, discs and fireballs” dating as far back as 1948, the files show. More recently, a senior US intelligence officer said he saw “countless orange orbs swarming in all directions” last year rendering him “speechless”.

The fresh batch of materials includes a half dozen documents, a handful of audio recordings and 51 videos, including one of an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) being shot to bits. The circumstances are unexplained.

What comes next as Alberta plans vote on separation

The western Canadian province of Alberta will ask its citizens this October whether they want to remain part of Canada or kick-start the process of holding a binding referendum on separation, marking a major test of the country’s unity, the first in decades.

Alberta’s leader, Premier Danielle Smith, announced the coming vote on 21 May in a televised address.

She said she herself supports a unified Canada.

Foreign nationals convicted of serious crimes can delay deportation process under new tribunal policy

Foreign nationals convicted of serious criminality may be permitted to delay a formal hearing determining whether they must leave Canada if they have appealed their convictions, under fresh policy guidelines drawn up by the head of the immigration tribunal that makes such decisions.

Guidelines issued by Immigration and Refugee Board chairperson Manon Brassard, coming into force on June 1, broaden the criteria for considering whether convicted foreign criminals can delay formal proceedings on “admissibility” to Canada, which would precede deportation.

The Conservatives have seized on the revised policy guidelines, arguing they would make it easier for foreign nationals convicted of serious crimes to remain in Canada and delay their removal.

China’s worst coal mining blast in over a decade kills 90

Beijing — A gas explosion at a coal mine in northern China has killed at least 90 people, according to state media, the country’s deadliest mining disaster in more than a decade.

Failed American asylum seeker blocked from deporting himself

A failed asylum seeker has been prevented from self-deporting to the US for a second time.

Olabode Shoniregun, 28, tried to fly home to Las Vegas from Heathrow airport on May 7 – but border officials stopped him from getting on the plane.

The rejection followed his first attempt to leave the country in December, when Home Office officials declared him “unfit to fly”. At the time, officials insisted that they were “working to remove him as soon as possible”.
