Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will join European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for the most high-profile political moment in the EU’s calendar, amid a worsening rift between the U.S. and Ottawa.
A European Commission official close to von der Leyen confirmed to POLITICO that Carney had accepted an invitation to attend the State of the EU speech in Strasbourg on Sept. 16, where the president will set out her priorities for the bloc.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta agreed to pay roughly $18 billion to settle a lawsuit brought by 29 states over allegations that Facebook and Instagram harmed children through addictive design.
NBC News reports that the settlement, which still needs a judge’s approval, came one day after Instagram chief Adam Mosseri testified in a California courtroom. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had also been expected to take the stand before the deal was reached.

Despite the U.S. and Canada coming very, very close to a concord on trade, it fell apart at the 11th hour.
The result? 50 per cent tariffs on more than $28 billion worth of Canadian exports. And Canada pledging dollar-for-dollar retaliation.
Now, there is still reason to believe this might be temporary. Both sides get hurt in a trade war. Canada more so, obviously, just given our relative size as compared to the U.S. market.
