As U.S.-Iranian relations thaw, Ottawa must remember the Islamic regime is not our friend

Last week, the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding meant to end the war that began in February. It extends a ceasefire, reopens the Strait of Hormuz and, most consequentially, clears the way for Iran to resume oil sales. The nuclear questions that started the war are intended to be addressed over the next two months. What Tehran gets now is a reprieve, a free hand to crush dissent at home, a nuclear program left intact for now and money. What Tehran will do with that money should concern us all.

Voters trusted their democracies. Elections were meaningful, but not existential. Citizens generally saw their choices reflected in policy, particularly when their party won enough seats to shape the governing agenda.

Cardus recently surveyed women — and for the first time, men — about their fertility ideals and intentions. For context, Canada’s total fertility rate in 2024 was 1.25 children per woman. This means we have joined the company of nations like South Korea with “lowest of the low” fertility.

The survey results showed that both men and women wish to have more children than they actually have by their mid-forties. Men desire slightly more children than women, and 59% of men aged 40-44 have fewer children than they wish. Only 53% of women say the same. Fewer than 50% of men and women are at their ideal family size by the time they reach their forties.

Canada’s electronic eavesdropping agency conducted cyberattacks to disrupt the activities of online foreign criminals who were brokering the purchase and sale of precursor chemicals used to make the opioid fentanyl, according to its latest annual report.

The Communications Security Establishment, in its 2025–26 annual report, said it also stepped up its intelligence and cyberdefence work in the Arctic this year, citing growing interest in the region from Russia and China, “extending beyond traditional military and cyberthreats to include economic and influence-related activities that seek to shape access, infrastructure, and decision-making in the region.”
