Migrants in the US on temporary protected status (TPS) should seek permanent residence or leave, Markwayne Mullin, Homeland Security secretary, said in the wake of last week’s supreme court decision that stripped humanitarian protections from hundreds of thousands of immigrants.
The remarks to CNN’s State of the Union program comes after a decision that could allow Donald Trump’s administration to deport Haitian and Syrian immigrants to home countries plagued by conflict and destitution.
“Either try to fill out the paperwork and be here underneath a permanent status, or we’ll help you get back to your country,” Mullin said.
There is a serious argument that Canada is no longer merely a large country with regional differences, but a country so vast, economically uneven, and culturally divided that it is becoming nearly impossible to govern effectively from the centre. That argument should not be dismissed as anger, nostalgia, or Western grievance. It deserves to be examined on its merits.

Shabir Ahmed, 73, a key figure in the Rochdale grooming gang scandal, is due to be released from prison on Thursday but cannot be thrown out of Britain because of a loophole in the Immigration Act 1971.
Even though he has been stripped of his citizenship while serving prison sentences totalling more than 40 years, Ahmed is protected from deportation by a provision in the act that exempts Commonwealth citizens who arrived in the UK before 1973 from removal.

Around 1,000 people marched through the southern French city of Narbonne on Sunday, June 28th, following the death of 17-year-old Louis, who was lynched by a gang of youths.
The march, organised under the slogan ‘Justice for All,’ was promoted on social media by several identitarian groups. Louis’s family declined to take part, saying they wished to avoid any political exploitation of their son’s death.

Toronto mayoral candidate Brad Bradford says Sankofa Square was once the epicentre of the city, the “Canadian version” of Times Square and a place where people would celebrate festivals and gather with friends for a night out.
But now, he says it’s become something of a “wasteland.”
