OTTAWA — Criminal charges involving Indian study permit holders in Canada increased by 8,800% between 2016 and 2024, according to a classified Canada Border Services Agency intelligence report, as scrutiny grows over how organized crime groups have exploited the country’s international student program.
OTTAWA — The Carney government has quietly walked back some of its cuts to a program providing temporary health-care coverage to refugees and asylum-seekers, months after slashing benefits for some of Canada’s most vulnerable newcomers.
Earlier this year, following a budget pledge to lower funding, Ottawa introduced changes to the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP), which provides health care to resettled refugees and asylum claimants who are waiting to qualify for provincial or territorial insurance.
Beginning in May, most people eligible for the program were required to pay 30 per cent of costs for health services, assistive devices and medical supplies that had previously been covered, along with $4 for prescription medication and refills.
Well, that didn’t take very long.

The top lieutenant of the Indian gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, Goldy Brar arrived in Canada in 2017, ostensibly to attend Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C.
But it is “unknown” if he ever went to class, records show.

Montreal refugee advocates say they are hearing from a growing number of Haitians in the United States who are considering coming to Canada after the Trump administration moved to end deportation protections for hundreds of thousands of people.

Three more Surrey properties will have notices filed on their land titles for unpermitted construction.
The City of Surrey has been cracking down on illegal construction for several years. In the more egregious cases, council has been voting to file notices on land titles to alert potential buyers and occupiers.

CALGARY — The latest controversy surrounding the kirpan has reared its head as a Sikh man carrying the ceremonial blade — worn by initiated Sikhs as an article of faith — inside a GoodLife Fitness gym in Windsor, Ontario, has reignited the debate that Canada has been having for decades, and it appears no closer to being resolved.
Maybe the kirpan was in the wash with his other outfit?

OTTAWA — The response to video of a popular Sikh fitness influencer being kicked out of a Windsor gym for wearing his kirpan while working out has not cost the employee her job.
In a statement, GoodLife Fitness confirmed to the Toronto Sun that the employee who challenged TikToker Gurpartap Singh Khalsa’s decision to wear his ceremonial dagger at the gym wasn’t fired, as some social media chatter had suggested.

Ottawa is redirecting immigration into small and remote communities, a move which threatens to replicate in small-town Canada the same immigration-fuelled social and economic problems plaguing major urban centres.
The Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP) was launched in January 2025, one of the last immigration policies implemented by the Trudeau government. A total of 14 communities are included, ranging from Claresholm in Alberta, Steinbach and Brandon in Manitoba, Peace Liard and West Kootenay in BC, and Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan.
