The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is a politicized bureaucracy that’s riddled with bloat, conflicts, propagandists and political bias that only caters to a small minority of Canadians. Yet taxpayers are forced to pay $1.2 billion annually to support it. This has to end.
The public broadcaster is looking to advance diversity in its indie originals after representation controversies around its ‘Trickster’ and ‘Kim’s Convenience’ series.
CBC says it will only commission new programs in which nearly a third of the key creative team is made up of members of under-represented communities.
“I’ve been reluctant to refer to our public broadcaster as a government broadcaster but this sealed it for me – it has become the government broadcaster running interference for PMJT at every turn,” said Alan Fryer.
… Compounding the stress and anxiety of journalists is the vitriol and harassment many of them face on social media platforms and, increasingly, in the field. As André Picard wrote in a recent column, “For journalists, platforms like Twitter can be a great way to find sources and promote their work, but also a cesspool of hatred. Increasingly, reporters are also physically attacked.”
The president of CBC/Radio-Canada, Catherine Tait, has also written about the increased abuse of journalists on social media, especially women and journalists of colour, and the threat such attacks pose to free speech and democracy.
Halifax Pride severed its ties with the Halifax Public Library because the library would not bend to demands to remove a book from their shelves. The book is Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters by Abigail Shrier, and a petition was circulated to have it removed from the library. The library refused.
“According to the United Nations and countless human rights organizations around the world (including ones based within Israel), what’s happening in the Occupied Palestinian Territories is a ‘grave breach of international law.’ Some groups believe the attacks amount to an ‘ethnic cleansing.’ It should be covered as such,” the open letter said.
CBC lost a court case yesterday. But, apart from possibly having to pay costs, it doesn’t matter. Not one bit.
For the few who have happily forgotten about the affair, its key points were that CBC management and their chief correspondent (named in the suit originally, but after very predictable embarrassments, her name was removed) sued one of Canada’s two main parties.
It’s been almost a quarter century since the Supreme Court of Canada told us that Indigenous oral traditions must be considered “on an equal footing” with other types of historical evidence. Alas, as the attack on famed Canadian filmmaker Michelle Latimer shows, the CBC still hasn’t gotten that memo. Thus does it fall to me to pour my emotional labour into educating the cultural reactionaries who staff our national broadcaster.
Court finds no evidence broadcaster suffered reputational damage
A lawsuit launched by the CBC against the Conservative Party of Canada in the final days of the 2019 federal election accusing the party of copyright infringement for using the broadcaster’s footage in an online ad and tweets has been dismissed by a federal court.
In his written decision released Thursday, Federal Court Justice Michael Phelan found that the use of such material fell under “fair dealing,” and that there was “no objective evidence of the likelihood of any reputational damage” to the CBC.
“There was no evidence presented that a broadcaster’s segment disclosed in a partisan setting reflected adversely on the broadcaster,” Phelan wrote.

We’ve always known the CBC is expensive – grossly expensive. It consumes, gulps, incinerates over $1.3 billion a year in tax money.
Oh, sure, $1.3 billion barely buys you a garden variety Liberal government scandal these days. But it’s still a solid chunk of change for hardworking Canadians, especially since most of them never watch or listen to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
A Canadian Broadcasting Company vehicle was vandalized in Kamloops over the weekend, with the words “Fake News” painted along its driver’s-side door.
The vehicle was parked in the lot at Second Avenue and Lansdowne Street on Sunday evening, with white paint poured over its windows and the words “Fake News” scrawled in what appears to be black spray paint.
How U.S. media lost the trust of the public
A global pandemic, historic anti-racism protests and a turbulent U.S. presidential election had Americans glued to their screens in 2020 like never before. Cable news ratings soared, online news subscriptions increased and the amount of time we all spent online broke records.
But as people consumed more news, they also began to trust the media less, surveys showed. According to a recent Gallup survey, the percentage of Americans with no trust in the mass media hit a record high in 2020: only nine per cent of respondents said they trust the mass media “a great deal” and a full 60 per cent said they have little to “no trust at all” in it.
The American media landscape has become increasingly polarized over the last few decades.

…Senior government officials who spoke to Radio-Canada/CBC said they often perceived Bercovici as more of a spokesperson for the Israeli government than the ambassador for Canada.
In her lawsuit, Bercovici described the allegations of disloyalty as “vicious and unmeritorious attacks on her integrity and loyalty.”
Senior government officials say Bercovici often met with Israeli government representatives without her Canadian embassy advisers present.
