The shamelessness of Hope not Hate

You would think that a group called ‘Hope not Hate’ would have a lot of important things to talk about at the moment. It could look at how the threat of Islamist extremism is corrupting our democracy, for instance. It might raise the alarm about the MPs unwilling to vote with their conscience when it comes to Gaza because they are ‘terrified’. Or point to Mike Freer, who after years of death threats was recently forced to resign as an MP. Hope not Hate might also have investigated the appalling ‘hate marches’ we’ve seen since 7 October, which brought anti-Semitic slogans and chants of ‘jihad’ to the streets of London – or the people with links to Hamas that have helped organise them. There’s certainly been no shortage of hate in Britain this past year.

The Guardian prides itself on being one of the most Left-leaning and anti-racist news outlets in the English-speaking world. So imagine its embarrassment when, last month, a number of black podcast producers researching the paper’s historic ties to slavery abruptly resigned, alleging they had been victims of “institutional racism”, “editorial whiteness”, “microaggressions, colourism, bullying, passive-aggressive and obstructive management styles”. All of this might smack of progressive excess, but, in reality, it merely reflects an institution incuriously at odds with itself.

Defiant students, fearful teachers and an elementary school in disarray: What really happened at Pinecrest Public School?

“The student voice was all that mattered, and basically they silenced the teachers’ voice,” said one former teacher.

An alarming email went out to staff at Pinecrest Public School last June with the subject line: “Students reporting they don’t feel safe!”

The sender was Michael Sternberg, a grade 5 and 6 teacher at Pinecrest. He explained how multiple students that very day told him they felt unsafe at the school. “I am not making this up!” he wrote. “Please help! Someone!”

The Hierarchy of Oppression

Perhaps the most common conservative reaction to progressive ideas is one of bewilderment. They’re from a different planet, inhabit an alternate universe; they’re insane! Even moderates employ these phrases to express their inability to understand the progressive mentality. And this is so even in regard to problems like crime that traditionally have provided common ground for partisan factions. Thus, the 1994 Crime Bill – also known as the Clinton Crime Bill and the Biden Crime Bill, was passed by an overwhelming bi-partisan majority in Congress.[1] Yet today it is anathema to progressives, who see violent criminals as “victims” of an unjust criminal justice system, and theft as a form of “reparations.” Extreme reversals like this have prompted liberal dissenters like Joe Manchin, Bill Maher and former congressman Harold Ford to express support for conservative concerns that progressives are “out of touch with reality,” and their views “lack common sense.”

This Economics Professor Who’s Behind B.C.’s New Economic Plan Wants To Remake Capitalism

British economist Mariana Mazzucato wants to remake capitalism by shaping economic growth around objectives such as tackling social inequality and sustainability. Her ideas attracted the interest of British Columbia’s Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation Minister, Ravi Kahlon, who sought out the economics professor at University College London, and she spent a year helping draft a new economic plan for the province. In a telephone interview with The Globe and Mail’s Justine Hunter, Prof. Mazzucato explains the concepts behind the new “Stronger BC” economic blueprint, which is designed to build back from the pandemic and the climate catastrophes of 2021.

A California city is planning to give universal basic income (UBI) to transgender and nonbinary residents regardless of their earnings level.

Transgender residents in Palm Springs, California are eligible to receive a UBI of up to $900 per month solely for identifying as transgender or nonbinary — no strings attached.

… Now, imagine a Canada where people openly support far right movements, openly complain about “depopulation of the Caucasian race …(because) the goal is, is to depopulate the Anglo-Saxon race because they are the ones with the strongest bloodlines,” and threaten to gridlock the nation’s capital or overthrow it. Where MPs are being told to hide as the mob receives police escort and are given access to washrooms and warm greetings with the same leaders who threaten to criminalize Black and Indigenous protestors for fighting for their lives.

This is the current reality, Canada. And it’s ugly.

You can’t parody something this divorced from reality.

Pittsburgh bridge’s 2016 infrastructure funding reportedly diverted to bike lanes and green energy programs

Instead of repairing the bridge with what likely would have been the Obama-era shovel-ready 2009 infrastructure funds for “roads and bridges,” known as the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,” the cash went to bike lanes and green boondoggles, and too bad about the actual structure that was decaying and deteriorating. Transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg loves those bike lanes. Bridges that stay up? That is for someone else to take care of. And of course, no one did. For local leftwing politicians and federal cash shovelers, it was too attractive to build bike lanes and dedicated lanes, the better for Democrats to show off to all their little lefty friends.
