‘Blackmail’: Europe fumes against White House demand for more diesel

The Trump administration’s full-court pressure campaign on Europe to release diesel supplies or face a U.S. export ban heading into the winter has split and angered European leaders, entangled oil companies and raised private charges of “blackmail.” It also appears to have worked.

Senior White House officials led a pressure campaign on European governments to open the spigot on their strategic reserves, according to 10 oil industry executives and European government officials who were granted anonymity to describe the negotiations. Their tactics ultimately led to G7 countries announcing they would release 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil from their strategic reserves over the next four months.

European allies push back against US-led NATO VIP club

BRUSSELS — Some NATO allies are resisting a U.S. effort to set up a close-knit group of alliance countries ostensibly based on their defense spending, arguing the initiative risks undermining unity just when Russia steps up its hybrid campaign in Europe.

The frustration comes after POLITICO reported that Washington had met a select group of favored allies twice since the spring in what has been dubbed the “Bergen Group,” after the collective’s first meeting in the eponymous Norwegian city earlier this year.

So far, the group’s members have included Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Germany and the Netherlands. After meeting in Bergen, the U.S. organized a similar meeting on the sidelines of the NATO leaders’ summit in Ankara in July, which Denmark and Turkey also attended. Members of the group are expected to meet again in Poland next month.

Yet another party Canada wasn’t invited to.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have purchased software from a digital forensics software company that U.S. authorities claim is secretly headquartered in Russia.

Oxygen Forensics presented itself as an American firm to land contracts with the U.S. government, when it was in fact controlled by Russian nationals via a Cypriot shell company, according to a criminal complaint filed by the U.S. Justice Department in late September.

A vigilante anti-Ulez activist who despised Sadiq Khan has been jailed after blowing up a roadside camera with a homemade bomb which sparked a counter-terror investigation.

Electrician Kevin Rees’s low-sophistication device was still powerful enough to send shrapnel flying for more than 100m, damaging a child’s bedroom window and crashing into cars nearby.

Rees, 63, was jailed for 15 years after being found guilty of causing an explosion to endanger life following a trial.

Based on their record, Canadians should get very nervous whenever the federal Liberals start talking about increasing Canada’s immigration levels, again.

Particularly so when Prime Minister Mark Carney casually signals the Liberals are about to do it not in Parliament, but in an interview with the New York Times .

Back when he was running for Liberal leader, Carney said excessive immigration under his predecessor, Justin Trudeau, was one of the reasons the Canadian economy was in bad shape before U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff war.

All Carney wants is to depress wages and falsify the GDP.

The great negotiator has served up a decrepit economy.

The tale of RAF Fairford grows stranger and stranger. In the early hours of Sunday morning, three white vans were found near the Gloucestershire base. Merriam-Webster defines a “fifth column” in its original, literal sense: “a group of secret sympathizers or supporters of an enemy that engage in espionage or sabotage within defense lines or national borders.” That is a high bar (i.e., hidden agents under foreign direction with actions timed to a military objective), and almost nothing discussed in American politics today clears it.

The term has widened in recent years. Political scientists now treat fifth-column politics as rhetoric, policy, or mobilization against domestic “enemies within.” Scott Radnitz of the University of Washington splits it into two types: subversive claims aimed at vulnerable minorities or immigrants and collusive claims aimed at elites said to serve a foreign power. Neither needs a hidden army or single chain of command. Both describe a domestic network—whether organized or not—whose activities, funding, or ideology line up with a foreign adversary, or that treats the U.S. constitutional order as illegitimate and works to replace it from the inside.

Passenger airline crashes are unusual, intentional ones are rare and intentional pilot crashes are virtually unheard of. Passenger planes are generally flown by highly trained airline pilots, many of them are veterans of their respective air forces, and they remain calm in a crisis.

That’s why there hasn’t been a single case of an American airline pilot deliberately crashing a plane and only one case of an airline pilot taking down a western plane with all onboard and that took place in 2015 when a suicidal first officer crashed Lufthansa’s Germanwings Flight 9525.
