Funke originally reported in a “fact-check” Wednesday that accounts of President Biden checking his watch during the solemn transfer ceremony honoring the 13 U.S. service members killed at the Kabul airport terrorist attack was “partly false.” Funke insisted that it occurred “only after” the ceremony.
Liberal MP Raj Saini drops out of re-election campaign following misconduct allegations
Raj Saini, a Liberal candidate in Ontario, says he will no longer be running in Canada’s 2021 federal election, following allegations that he harassed a former member of his staff. Saini has firmly denied the allegations.
In a statement Saturday, Saini confirmed he has taken “the painful decision” to end his campaign for the 44th Parliament.

BELGRADE, Serbia — Austria’s leader says any migration wave from Afghanistan should be handled in neighboring countries.
Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said Saturday in Belgrade that a potential wave toward Europe must not take place. He adds that “this is why we are in contact with countries in the region.”
Kurz spoke after meeting Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic. Thousands of migrants from the Middle East, Africa or Asia have been stranded in Serbia and neighboring countries situated on the so-called Balkan migration route toward Western Europe.
Afghans should be ‘sent back at the border,’ says AfD lead candidate Tino Chrupalla
One of the two lead candidates for the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Tino Chrupalla, says he opposes offering asylum to the vast majority of Afghans.
Chrupalla complained that of the first 4,000 people who had been flown out by the German military from Kabul airport during the recent multinational airlift, only 136 counted as what he would consider to be local support staff in Afghanistan.
Asked to clarify how he would define the term local support staff, Chrupalla said: “They are for example interpreters who worked for the German military.” When asked if only Bundeswehr staff, he said he did not want “NGOs or anything else diluting the term. Otherwise, it can’t be verified. Who can say for sure which people are truly local staff?”

The Taliban blames America for the 9/11 hijackings in a newly-released video that was aired on Afghan television. The production, “Victorious Force 3,” is the latest in a series of short films celebrating the Taliban’s “martyrdom-seeking” squadrons — that is, the units responsible for conducting complex suicide attacks.
The nearly 40-minute film, which was broadcast on Afghanistan’s national RTA television station, is intended to commemorate the Taliban’s victory over the U.S.-backed government and Western forces. The Taliban describes America as the true “terrorist” party, while blaming the U.S. for the 20-year war.

TORONTO — Hosts of private social gatherings in York Region will now need to keep a list of their guests for contact tracing as part of two new public health measures put in place ahead of the long weekend.
In a news release issued Friday afternoon, officials said the region’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Karim Kurji made two changes to COVID-19 measures to help curb the spread of COVID-19 amid a fourth wave of the pandemic.
The most notable is the addition of a new measure requiring anyone hosting a social gathering in a private residence or a commercial facility to keep a list of names and contact information for all attendees. The hosts must also be able to provide the list to public health officials within 24 hours of a request.
I’m sure it’s only a temporary measure like income tax.
Supermarket Chain in New Zealand Reportedly Takes Knives Off Shelves After Stabbing Attack
Following Friday’s terrorist attack in New Zealand’s city of Auckland, supermarket giant Countdown has temporarily removed all knives and scissors from sale, the New Zealand Herald reported.
“We want all of our team to feel safe when they come to work, especially considering the events of yesterday,” Countdown’s General Manager of Corporate Affairs Kiri Hannifin told the newspaper.
The newspaper further reported that Countdown is even considering stopping the sale of all knives and scissors permanently. Foodstuffs NZ also retrieved their knives from sale.
MONTREAL, Sept 3 (Reuters) – Canada’s Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau finds himself behind in polls ahead of a snap election he called hoping his management of the COVID-19 crisis would propel him to victory.
Trudeau called the Sept. 20 election last month, two years ahead of schedule. At the time, his Liberals were well ahead and looked likely to regain the majority in parliament they lost in 2019. His main rival, Conservative leader Erin O’Toole, has repeatedly attacked him for calling a vote during the pandemic.
The latest polls by Nanos, Ekos and others show Liberal fortunes have faded as voters have grown fatigued with Trudeau, 49, who has been in power since 2015. One Liberal strategist said on Friday the early-vote call had backfired as it was seen as “wrong” and “greedy” by electors.
