Elon Musk is right: declining birth rates are a threat to civilisation

Elon Musk has described declining birth rates as one of the “biggest threats to civilisation”. Speaking at a Wall Street Journal event earlier this week he said: “If people don’t have more children, civilisation is going to crumble. Mark my words.”

This isn’t the first time he’s issued this warning. In an interview back in September, he remarked that “a lot of people think there are too many people on the planet; in fact there’s too few.” He also reiterated the point on Twitter yesterday.

The queen is the last sane royal standing

It’s funny to think that, when I was a child, the queen’s Christmas speech was the cue for the nation to fall into a collective postprandial slumber. For the past few years, her nearest and dearest have seen to it that her life has outdone any Bond film when it comes to anticipation of what fresh hell awaits our battle-sore yet unbowed hero(ine) around the next corner. Is she going to ignore her favourite son’s alleged association with a dead paedophile? Her grandson’s allegation that her family contains a racist?

The Royal Woke progeny are unwelcome scolds. I do not see a long future ahead for the firm. No one wants to pay the freight for their virtue signaling.

Trans UPenn swimmer says competing on women’s team is ‘fair’ – complains about muscle and strength loss due to hormone treatments

University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas broke her silence Thursday amid widespread outrage over her smashing women’s swim records, praising the controversial IOC rules for transgender athletes and noted her muscle and strength loss while saying she’s ‘nowhere close’ to her pre-transition speeds – which would shatter female world records.

The transgender swimmer gave a 26-minute interview to SwimSwam, which covers college and Olympic swimming news, praising the fairness of the controversial IOC guidelines on inclusivity and saying they keep ‘competitional integrity going.’

Thomas – who competed as a man on the UPenn team for three years before she transitioned, now competing on the women’s team – continues to dominate in the pool, setting three school and two Ivy League records over the weekend at a meet. But her success has fanned the flames of an ongoing debate and upset some of her fellow UPenn teammates.

The nuances of the Kim Potter manslaughter trial

The Minnesota police officer shot Daunte Wright dead after yelling three ‘taser’ warnings

For the fourth time in the last four years, Minnesota is trying a police officer for excessive use of force in a highly-publicized case watched by people around the world. In three of the four cases, an officer killed a black man during an alleged misdemeanor stop in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

Kim Potter trial: Experts sound off on mistaking handgun for Taser

“Every Taser course I know of emphasizes making sure you don’t inadvertently pull one when you need the other,” said David Katz, a former senior special agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration and the founder and CEO of Global Security Group. “That is why most departments use the Taser in a cross-draw position, which is separate from the strong-side holster for the regular firearm.”

Company behind pink delivery robots to temporarily pull devices off Toronto sidewalks

TORONTO – A technology company says it will temporarily take its food delivery robots off Toronto’s streets as the city considers whether to ban such devices from sidewalks.

Tiny Mile, the company behind a series of pink, heart-eyed robots named Geoffrey, says it is making the temporary move because it wants to collaborate with authorities and the accessibility community.

A bunch of these little guys got stuck in an inch of snow recently.

Public Health Agency of Canada failed to keep tabs on most quarantine hotel stays, says AG

Public Health Agency of Canada failed to keep tabs on most quarantine hotel stays, says AG

The Public Health Agency of Canada struggled to keep track of whether travellers ordered to stay in quarantine hotels actually did so, according to a new report from the auditor general.

Auditor General Karen Hogan tabled four reports this afternoon in the House of Commons looking at COVID-19 measures. One of the reports examines enforcement of quarantine hotel stays and testing requirements from July 1, 2020 to the end of June 2021.

At the start of the year — in addition to the already required 14-day quarantine period — the government introduced new rules for incoming travellers meant to limit the spread of COVID-19 and its variants.

In Canada if you do the right thing, or rather what the government tells you is the right thing, you get fucked over. The guy who has cut my hair for nearly 20 years may be closing up shop. He played by the covid rules and locked down his shop. He refused under the table “home” business etc. Meanwhile everyone else was making bank doing home visits or even in one case he knows of opening up a full fledged mini-salon in their home.

He’s trying to make it work but the costs of employing staff and rent for a storefront shop etc are currently insurmountable. Changed consumer habits make it doubtful he’ll see business rebound. Walk in traffic is way down from pre-pandemic days and ongoing covid restrictions mean that the events people used to get a cut for occur at nowhere near past levels. Finally people just like the convenience of a cut at home. A bad time for the traditional barber shop.

Jussie Smollett guilty of staging race-baiting hate attack to boost career

CHICAGO — Jussie Smollett was convicted Thursday of staging a hate crime nearly three years after he claimed two Trump-loving bigots beat him up, tied a noose around his neck and doused him in bleach in a misbegotten bid to raise his public profile.

Twelve jurors in Chicago criminal court found the disgraced actor guilty of five of six counts of felony disorderly conduct for filing a false police report following testimony from 13 witnesses and more than nine hours of deliberation.

Arabs to Biden: Do Not Let Iran Play You for a Fool

On the eve of the resumption of the Iran nuclear talks in Vienna, Arabs have again warned the Biden administration against being duped by the mullahs of Tehran.

The Arabs, who share Israel’s concern over Iran’s accelerated efforts (and deceptive tactics) to achieve nuclear weapons, also warned the Biden administration against reaching a temporary deal that would give Iran more time to proceed with its disastrous and dangerous plans.

Rex Murphy: Toronto school board takes lunacy to a whole new level

I took down from the bookshelf last night my faded copy of Stephen Leacock’s fabulous Nonsense Novels. I was checking to see if our great humorist, in that fine survey of silliness and vacuity, had lent his quill to the operations of the Toronto District School Board. Alas, not. He was too early on the Earth to reap the harvest the TDSB could have offered him. Even so, were he alive today, even his grand radar for the ridiculous might have been overwhelmed by the density and volume of material, already at hand and in no need of comic exaggeration, for his satirical treatment.

Turley: Jussie Smollett Could Walk; Testimony Aimed at ‘Jury Nullification‘

George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley wrote Wednesday that disgraced former Empire actor Jussie Smollett could walk out of court a free man, thanks to testimony aimed at persuading the jury to sympathize with him.

I can’t see a jury deliberately ignoring evidence and letting Jussie off. He isn’t “likeable” for any reason.

Pity that at most he faces 3 years in jail. I doubt he’ll do a third of that.
