AfD’s Saxony-Anhalt Historic Victory Hailed by Europe’s Right, Elon Musk

Preliminary results from the Sunday vote in Saxony-Anhalt region of Germany show the landslide win of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) securing around 43.8% of the vote, earning 39 seats in the 83-member state parliament. Although not an outright majority, the result may be the beginning of the end of the monopoly on power of mainstream establishment forces in Germany.

Official results are expected on Monday night, but the power dynamics are already clear: a huge win for the AfD, and devastating news for Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Voters have clearly expressed their dissatisfaction with the CDU that has governed the region for 24 years: the Chancellor’s party securing only 17.2% of the votes. Merz is expected to discuss the results with his cabinet today and gather a crisis panel in the capital.

U.S. President Donald Trump last month launched tariffs on goods ranging from hockey sticks and cement to honey, after trade talks between the two nations broke down.

Countervailing Canadian tariffs are set to affect American goods such as dairy products, plywood and sunscreen.

On Oct. 7, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan is scheduled to hear Saudi Arabia’s appeal of a ruling that allowed the families’ lawsuit against the kingdom to proceed. According to the New York Post, attorneys representing nearly 10,000 victims and relatives believe two videos involving Saudi national Omar al-Bayoumi provide critical evidence of a Saudi role in the attacks.

“Canada is our friend, our closest ally and our biggest trading partner,” Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins told Politico in an interview published last week.

“This is not China that we are talking about. This is not an adversarial country. And … our economies are so linked, if you try to hurt one you end up hurting Maine.”

What we really saw at the Portsmouth migrant boat protest

What happened in Portsmouth last night was extraordinary. Citizens waded into the bitter sea to try to prevent the arrival of foreign men who were all but ferried in by the authorities. Ordinary people stepped up as reluctant, unpaid border guards while actual border guards rolled out the red carpet for a hundred blokes from heaven knows where. Everyday Brits stood vigil over our shores while the state threw those shores open to all-comers.

How do we even define this? What do we call it? The media has reached for that small, familiar word “protest”, as if this were a mere outburst of public anger over government policy. It was so much more than that. This was ordinary men and women stepping into the breach left by the state’s desertion of our borders. It was working-class self-organisation in defence of our national sovereignty. It is unprecedented.

An Afghan small boat migrant travelled almost 200 miles to stab a shop worker to death near Westminster Abbey, a court has heard.

Suliaman Tajzai, 18, travelled from Leeds to London to allegedly murder 26-year-old Farmanullah Sherzad on March 27 this year.

Tajzai, of Beeston in Leeds, chased Mr Sherzad through the Peabody Estate on Abbey Orchard Street, London, with two local residents hearing the commotion.

Formerly York’s mayor, he left office in January and has since taken a hiatus from all things political. “I’m completely out of it,” he said. “I’ve given over 100 per cent for a long time, so this was my time to step away. … I’m exhausted, you know? I fought and fought and fought since I was a teenager.”
