In addition to its general corruptibility, one thing you can be sure of when it comes to the federal government is that it’s probably not a good idea to trust federal employees to conceal your misdeeds. In the bureaucracy, “good enough” is the standard for quality work.

And so, when President Donald Trump delivered his address to the nation on July 16, he brought attention to something we should know much more about but don’t yet: the discovery of “burn bags,” which Trump said contained sensitive documents from the Obama administration.

Silicon Valley is embracing armed robots. Washington is making room.

Looking for his next business, San Francisco entrepreneur Sankaet Pathak sought an idea that might change the future. He settled on building humanlike robots with weapons.

In May, his company, Foundation, released footage of its sleek Phantom robot loading a mortar. In the video, the robot moves gingerly — but Pathak says he can envision a future of autonomous weapons, with robots making quick decisions on the battlefield.

The launch of Foundation in 2024 was a radical step, given many in the industry’s long-standing opposition to letting autonomous devices decide where to attack without human sign-off and promises by other leading robot companies not to arm their creations.

Trump again threatens tariffs over smoke after sitting with Mark Carney

After sitting together with Prime Minister Mark Carney during Sunday’s World Cup final in New Jersey, U.S. President Donald Trump isn’t letting up on his threat to tariff Canada over wildfire smoke.

Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews on Sunday night, Trump said he has a good relationship with Carney, but the fires need to stop.

He said the fires are poisoning U.S. air, and that maybe Canada should pay damages, or the U.S. should impose tariffs.

Armed loon sets off ‘incendiary device’ outside NYC fed HQ as terrorism task force probes anti-ICE attack

An armed maniac lit an “incendiary device” outside a federal building in lower Manhattan early Monday in an anti-ICE attack being investigated by the terrorism task force, according to officials and sources.

The unidentified man started a fire outside of 26 Federal Plaza around 8:30 a.m., ignited fireworks and threatened passersby with airsoft rifles around 8:30 a.m., police and sources said.

Fintrac flags ‘high-risk’ Canadian crypto shops knowingly helping to launder funds for organized crime and Iran-linked groups

A broad swath of crypto businesses in Canada are intentionally acting as conduits for money laundering, Iran-linked sanctions evasion and organized crime, the federal anti-money laundering watchdog has found.

The alarming conclusion is contained in an internal briefing from the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre (Fintrac), authored around the time the Star and media partners published articles exposing unlawful practices by operations known as over-the-counter (OTC) cash desks or crypto-to-cash services.

The country’s top spy agency says Natural Resources Canada approached it with concerns about former federal scientist Dennis Lu more than two decades ago, not the other way around — and has made a rare disclosure of one of its documents in court to set the record straight, CBC News has learned.

There are also new details about part of the reason for a 23-month delay between the last Canadian Security and Intelligence Service (CSIS) briefing about Lu to his employer in February 2021 and the start of Natural Resources’ internal investigation into Lu in January 2023.

US expands Iran offensive as diplomats claim talks ongoing

The US has expanded its aerial offensive against Iran, hitting a city hosting a nuclear power plant, while Iran has responded with strikes on Bahrain and Kuwait, as diplomats insist talks are ongoing.

Iranian media on Monday reported strikes around Tabriz, believed to hold underground missile bases, as well as Bushehr, home to the country’s only operational civilian nuclear power plant as the US military said it had struck “military command centers, air defence and coastal surveillance sites, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites and communications networks”.

Iran launched attacks against Bahrain, which hosts the US navy’s fifth fleet, and Kuwait, in addition to striking tankers in the strait of Hormuz, which carried a fifth of global oil and gas supplies before the war.

Could China and Russia really destroy Starlink? Only with a boomerang.

One week ago, three widely respected European news outlets published the results of an investigation into what they described as a “joint plan” by China and Russia to “defeat Elon Musk’s Starlink.”

The story was the product of a long-running inquiry by The Insider, Der Spiegel, and Le Monde. Reporters at those publications said they reviewed a cache of documents detailing growing military cooperation between China and Russia. The documents covered discussions between the nuclear powers on integrated air and missile defense systems, autonomous “swarm” loitering munitions, next-generation armored vehicles, and military aviation, the report said.

Heat pump households face winter warmth rationing as the drive to net zero raises increasing fears of blackouts.

By the end of next year, electricity suppliers will be able to remotely turn down heat pump central heating to help Britain’s energy system cope with high demand.

Suppliers are expected to do so on the instructions of the quango responsible for coordinating the grid, which is overseen by Ed Miliband’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).

Of course Carney is BIG on Heat Pumps.
