No one envies Karen Duncan her diagnosis.
Motor Neuron Disease attacks the body’s nerve cells, and in Duncan’s case, it was doing so quickly. Her muscles ached and cramped; then she had to walk with a cane; then she had to motor around in a wheelchair; meanwhile, she stopped being able to trust her thoughts and emotions. Her prognosis wasn’t good either: things would get progressively worse, she would eventually be paralyzed, and then she would die.
There are two people in Canada who have caused the deaths of hundreds through poison.
The first poisoner held no medical licence and operated outside of Canadian law. He sold and shipped toxic chemicals with tracking numbers after having advertised on suicide forums. He killed more than 50 people a year. In May 2026, he pleaded guilty to counselling or aiding suicide.
Ten years after Canada legalized medical assistance in dying (MAID), the safeguards Canadians were promised are looking increasingly shaky. Troubling cases and serious questions about oversight should give Canadians reason to pause before the system is expanded again.
Since 2016, there have been more than 100,000 MAID deaths and Canada has gained an international reputation as a prolific provider of death.
LINCOLN, Ont.—A Canadian activist against euthanasia says the procedure is increasingly being used as a solution to address gaps in health care and mental health services, criticizing Canada’s ever-expanding medical assistance in dying (MAID) regime.
“I think that euthanasia and assisted suicide are basically the cynical solution to everything that ails us. Palliative beds are really expensive—body bags are not,” said Jonathon Van Maren, author and communications director at the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform.
An 83-year-old Canadian grandmother was euthanized under the country’s Medical Assistance in Dying program on July 10, 2026, despite having previously declined it because of her Christian faith and without providing what her family describes as a final verbal confirmation of consent.
Brigitte Stegemann, known lovingly to her family as “GG,” died by lethal injection at The Pearl (formerly E.J. McQuigge Lodge), a long-term care facility in Belleville, Ontario, where she had lived for the previous two years.

A 49-year-old B.C. woman who documented her experience with young-onset Alzheimer’s disease has died after she was approved for medical assistance in dying (MAID).
Rebecca Luna, a mother of two from Victoria, B.C., died at approximately 1:15 p.m. on July 25, according to a post on the TikTok account where she described the disease and what it was doing to her to more than 97,000 followers. She called herself a young-onset Alzheimer’s and MAID advocate.
While being treated for a hip fracture at the Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), a Vancouver priest was offered MAiD twice, despite not being close to dying and going against the priest’s beliefs.
Father Larry Holland, 79, was recovering from his hip fracture at VGH back in April after a fall in his bathroom on Christmas Day.
No sooner had France passed its law authorising euthanasia than a borderline case emerged in the press, bearing witness to the deadly spiral into which the country is being drawn. It undoubtedly illustrates the concerns of those who had been warning of a gradual shift in decision-making power towards the medical profession.
A paper published by the New England Journal of Medicine suggested that Canada should take advantage of the bumper crop of corpses produced by its euthanasia policies and begin harvesting them for organs.
The organs would be taken from the euthanasia volunteers while they are sedated, but still alive.

A new paper is reviving the idea of “death by organ donation” — retrieving organs from MAID patients while they are sedated and unconscious but still alive.
Current law prohibits it, due to the long-standing dead donor rule, or DDR, which holds that people must be dead before organs can be removed (the “Death Requirement”) and that doctors must not kill a person by means of procuring his or her organs (the “Don’t Kill Rule”).
Hundreds of MAID cases in British Columbia in 2024 involved reporting errors and “compliance concerns” that resulted in practitioners receiving “education” on the criminal law and professional standards governing MAID, according to an internal B.C. government document.
The findings are bolstering calls for stronger, independent oversight of the country’s assisted death regime.

The B.C. oversight unit for medical assistance in dying (MAID) identified 2,807 cases that required government “follow-up” from at least 4,169 MAID cases handled that year, according to the documents first obtained by the news outlet Canadian Catholic News through a freedom of information request.
