The Secret Hamas-NGO Relationship

Humanitarian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the Gaza Strip have been thoroughly infiltrated by Hamas, according to a new report by NGO Monitor: Puppet Regime: Hamas’ Coercive Grip on Aid and NGO Operations in Gaza. The report is based on Arabic-language documents, retrieved by Israel’s military, spanning the years 2018-2022, from Hamas’s Gaza Interior Security Mechanism (ISM), a unit within the Hamas Ministry of Interior and National Security.

“The evidence confirms that NGOs in Gaza do not operate independently or neutrally,” NGO Monitor found. “Rather, they are embedded in an institutionalized framework of coercion, intimidation, and surveillance that serves Hamas’ terror objectives.”

New poll suggests one in five Albertans would vote to separate

Although Alberta separatists are organizing for an independence referendum and say they’re gaining momentum, a new poll released Friday suggested that only one-fifth of Alberta respondents would vote to separate.

The Pollara Strategic Insights survey found that 19 per cent of the 1,000 Albertans surveyed say they would vote for separation, and 75 per cent would vote against it.

Cuba, a major beneficiary of Venezuelan oil, has now been cut off from those shipments as U.S. forces continue to seize tankers in an effort to control the production, refining and global distribution of the country’s oil products.

It may come as a surprise to Canadians to discover that Sunday is Sir John A. Macdonald Day. The first surprise might be that such a day exists at all, while the second may be that it has not yet been repealed, given various egregious “cancellations” of the Dominion’s first prime minister over the past decade. The statue removals, changed street names and cowardly expunction of his name from schools and awards reflected a moment in Canadian history that one hopes is not revisited.

Small majority of Canadians want more trade with China: Ipsos poll

As Prime Minister Mark Carney prepares to travel to China and seeks to restore trade and diplomatic ties, a small majority of Canadians say they support more trade with Beijing, a new poll suggests.

The Ipsos poll conducted exclusively for Global News, released Saturday, found that 54 per cent expressed support for closer trade ties and economic agreements with China.

RCAF wants more than 1,200 security personnel to protect F-35s, other planes

OTTAWA — The Royal Canadian Air Force wants to hire more than a thousand new security personnel over the next five years at bases across the country — just as it brings its new F-35 stealth fighter jets into service.

Internal documents from spring 2025, obtained by The Canadian Press through the Access-to-Information law, show the Air Force drafted a plan to first hire 199 new security personnel by 2028, then expand that security force to 747 in 2029 and 1,227 by 2030.

The information comes from a presentation on the RCAF’s submission to the future structure plan — basically the Canadian Armed Forces’ personnel planning document — and outlines a scenario for staff growth that was drafted when Lt.-Gen. Eric Kenny commanded the Air Force.

Authorities in Nicaragua have arrested at least 60 people for reportedly celebrating or expressing support for the capture of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, a human rights watchdog group and local media outlets said Friday.

Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega and his wife, vice president Rosario Murillo, are staunch allies of Maduro, who was captured by US military personnel in Caracas last Saturday and taken to New York to face trial on drug and weapons charges.

‘The answer cannot be nothing’: The battle over Canada’s mystery brain disease

Five hundred people in a small Canadian province were diagnosed with a mystery brain disease. What would it mean for the patients if the disease was never real?

In early 2019, officials at a hospital in the small Canadian province of New Brunswick noticed that two patients had contracted an extremely rare brain condition known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, or CJD.

CJD is both fatal and potentially contagious, so a group of experts was quickly assembled to investigate. Fortunately for New Brunswick, the disease didn’t spread. But the story didn’t end there. In fact, it was just beginning.

Among the experts was Alier Marrero, a soft-spoken, Cuban-born neurologist who had been working in the province for about six years. Marrero would share some worrying information with the other members of the group. He had been seeing patients with unexplained CJD-like symptoms for several years, he said, including young people who showed signs of a rapidly progressing dementia. The number of cases was already more than 20, Marrero said, and several patients had already died.
