A teacher who sparked fury by showing cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed to pupils during a lesson about blasphemy is living in a ‘safe house’ with his wife and children because of fears they will be attacked.

More than six weeks after fleeing his home following angry demonstrations outside Batley Grammar School in West Yorkshire, the teacher and his family are still being given police protection. The threat to their safety is judged so severe that even their relatives have not been told where they are living.

At a meeting in a run-down cafe in London, Michael, now calling himself Mohammed, is in full flow.

An Irishman with a shining moon-face fringed by an orange beard, he exudes all the joy and intensity of the religious convert as he romanticises an ideology he barely comprehends.

He warms to his theme, exhorting me to return home to fight for the Taliban and liberate my country from the infidel. I’m used to this. I recently had a blazing row with some of my own extended family who whined on about how things were better under the Taliban, and how a woman’s honour was safer.

This is absurd beyond belief, yet indicative of the level of anti-British ideology that circulates among these Muslim leaders in Britain. It is also alarming that these leaders are brazen enough to operate within the UK as if they were in Sharia-adherent Pakistan, with its infamous blasphemy laws.
