Devout Catholics Support Mass Deportations

The Incredulity of Saint Thomas – Guercino

A new poll reveals what mass attendance actually predicts about virtue and deportation policy.

America’s Catholic bishops may incessantly complain about President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda, but American Catholics actually support such measures as mass deportations. EWTN News and RealClear Opinion Research published a poll late last week which found that a majority (54 percent) of American Catholics favor mass deportations, including 27.5 percent (the largest share recorded in the poll) who “strongly favor” the policy, while only 30 percent oppose it and less than 17 percent expressed indifference. Support for the “detention and deportation of unauthorized immigrants on a broad scale” increased to 60 percent among white Catholics and opposition fell to 26 percent.

Vivian Bercovici: Bondi Beach massacre is what globalizing the intifada looks likes

More than 1,000 Jewish people congregated on Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach on Sunday to celebrate the first night of Chanukah, a festival of light and miracles.

What unfolded was disturbingly reminiscent of October 7. Two gunmen opened fire with automatic weapons targeting the gathering of Jews. Shouts of “Allahu Akhbar” were reportedly heard. One of the gunmen is captured on video warning people who were not Jewish to run away. The event was unguarded, but the nearest police station was a mere 150 metres away. Eyewitnesses say it took what seemed like an eternity for police to arrive and respond, between five and 10 minutes.

Selling F-35s to Turkey Guarantees a New War against Israel

US President Donald Trump may believe that selling F-35 stealth warplanes to Turkey will help the country forge closer ties with the US at the expense of Russia. The reality, though, is that by providing such sophisticated fighter jets to a country that supports Hamas terrorists — and whose president recently said that “Israel will have no choice but to kneel in front of Turkey” — Trump is merely stoking the flames of a future war aimed at destroying Israel.

What are your rights as a Canadian if asked by a U.S. border agent to see your social media?

The news that some travellers visiting the U.S. might soon be asked to share personal things like social media and email accounts has left many Canadians unsettled about what could happen at the border.

A notice published Wednesday in the U.S. Federal Register said U.S. Customs and Border Protection advises collecting five years’ worth of social media information from travellers from some countries that don’t need to get visas to come to the U.S. It’s the latest move by the Trump administration when it comes to monitoring international travellers and immigrants.

Meghan has no plans to see her father Thomas Markle again

The Duchess of Sussex has no plans to see her father, who is recovering in hospital from a leg amputation, and has given up hope of ever reconciling with him.

On Wednesday, Meghan, 44, who has not seen Thomas Markle for many years, “reached out” to the 81-year-old with a letter hand-delivered to him in a hospital in the Philippines, where he now lives.

She has not attempted to ring him at the hospital, fearing a phone call could be overheard.

Expert warns of ‘unintended consequences’ if Canada implements youth social media ban

Australia’s first-of-its-kind legislation that restricts young people from using popular social media sites came into effect Wednesday, and other countries are considering following suit, but an expert says a similar blanket ban for youth isn’t likely to work in Canada.

Australians under the age of 16 are no longer legally permitted to have accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, YouTube, Snapchat, Reddit, Kick, Twitch or TikTok.

As of Wednesday, those platforms were expected to have removed any accounts in violation of the new law and to have measures put in place to prevent those teens from making new ones.

Start with the kids finish with the adults.

Naveed Akram, 24, and his 50-year-old accomplice are believed to be father and son, authorities said on Monday.

New York is the 8th state found to have improperly issued commercial driver’s licenses to Illegal alien invaders

New York is the eighth state found to routinely issue commercial driver’s licenses to immigrants that are valid long after they are no longer legally authorized to be in the country, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Friday, and he threatened to withhold $73 million in highway funds unless the system is fixed and any flawed licenses are revoked.

New York was the fourth state run by a Democratic governor called out publicly by Duffy in his effort to make sure truck and bus drivers are qualified to either haul passengers or 80,000 pounds of cargo down the highway. He previously questioned similar practices in California, Pennsylvania and Minnesota.

GUNTER: Floor-crossers to Liberals go against voters’ wishes

I’m sorry, Mr. Ma, but it makes you look a little flaky to be elected to the House of Commons for the first time in April, then in December to switch parties from the Conservatives to the Liberals.

Yet that’s exactly what Ontario MP Michael Ma did on Thursday. After being elected as a rookie Conservative in the riding of Markham-Unionville not quite eight months ago, Ma decided to flip allegiances.

US wargames played out scenarios for Maduro’s fall. None of them ended well for Venezuela

Nicolás Maduro is chased out of office by a massive popular revolt but the Venezuelan military takes to the streets, turning its guns on the civilians who have brought him down.

A palace coup sends Venezuela’s authoritarian leader into exile, sparking a bloody power struggle between members of his disintegrating regime.

Maduro or a key ally is assassinated by a US “decapitation” strike but – as foreign soldiers commandeer Caracas and key airports and ports – leftwing insurgents tighten their grip on the country’s mineral-rich hinterlands and regime loyalists launch guerrilla-style attacks on oil refineries and pipelines.

Government retreats on Victims of Communism memorial names in aftermath of Nazi controversy

The controversial Victims of Communism memorial in downtown Ottawa will no longer feature the names of specific individuals after federal officials determined a significant number could be linked to the Nazis.

The memorial, located near the corner of Wellington and Bay streets, was intended to honour those who suffered under communism.

But concerns have been raised over the years by Jewish organizations and historians that names of eastern Europeans who collaborated with the Nazis in the Holocaust have been put forward in an attempt to whitewash their past.

Limiting Compassion: Why Industrialized Niceness Fails the Vulnerable

Modern compassion is loud, immediate, and collective. It is expressed in slogans, hashtags, yard signs, and ritual affirmations that signal moral alignment at scale. What it is less often is personal, costly, or binding. We have become very good at expressing care, but very bad at assuming responsibility.

The danger here is not insincerity. Most people who participate in these displays mean well. The danger is structural. When compassion is industrialized — centralized, abstracted, and detached from consequence — it begins to drift. It no longer asks what can realistically be done, who must pay the cost, or where responsibility lies. Instead, it satisfies the moral needs of the compassionate while leaving the suffering largely untouched.

Two stories — one associated with the political left, one with the right — reveal this problem with uncomfortable clarity.

Want to recall a Canadian politician? It’s not easy — if it’s even allowed where you live

It’s not so easy to remove a politician from office between elections in Canada.

That’s due, in part, to the fact there are few jurisdictions in the country where laws to recall an elected representative are in place. And even where recalls are an option, the requirements to trigger one are challenging, some political observers say.

But the process is currently being played out in a major way in Alberta, where, thanks to citizen-led petition drives, 21 members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) who belong to the governing United Conservative Party (UCP) — including Premier Danielle Smith — are facing recall petitions from constituents. One Alberta NDP MLA is also facing a recall.
