MANDEL: Thankfully, no jail time for Whitby dad who fired at armed intruders who shot his son

It’s hard not to imagine any one of us being enraged dad Jason Munroe.

Fortunately, the Whitby father of three will not be going to jail for firing at the home invaders who shot his adult son – the Crown has lost its bid to overturn Munroe’s conditional sentence of two years of house arrest.

“Given the exceptional circumstances of the offence and the significant mitigating factors, we see no error in principle in this case,” wrote Court of Appeal Justice Steve Coroza on behalf of the three-judge panel. “Nor do we find that the sentence was manifestly unfit.”

Mounties reviewing First Nations’ call for treason probe into Alberta premier, UCP

Canada’s top Mountie has told First Nations leaders in Alberta the RCMP will review the chiefs’ call for a criminal treason investigation into the province’s premier and governing party, a response that has some chiefs optimistic.

“It’s one step closer in regards to what we want to achieve in bringing this forward,” said Chief Desmond Bull of the Louis Bull Tribe in Maskwacis, who researched and formulated the case for the allegation.

Businesses fear closure with no Canada-U.S. trade deal as industry reacts

OTTAWA – The head of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce calls the breakdown in talks for a Canada-U.S. trade deal a “self-defeating” body blow for continental competitiveness.

Candance Laing, Canadian Chamber of Commerce president, says in a statement no deal means American costs will go up and some Canadian firms will close.

Bea Bruske, president of the Canadian Labour Congress, said on social media that walking away from a bad deal “is the right choice for Canada.”

I haven’t seen the Chamber of Commerce this upset since word of the massive abuse of the TFW program broke … Oh wait a minute they’re cheerleaders for that evil.

America’s commitments have outrun its fleet

News about the problems aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is another tangible sign that America’s military is overstretched. Thankfully, help is on the way — if Congress will pay for it.

Forget arguing over whether the crewmembers on the Lincoln are suffering from bad food or mental health problems, as is alleged. The undeniable fact is that the ship just set a record for the length of time deployed without a port call. Spending 260 days at sea without ever getting off a ship would be taxing for anyone, much less for sailors operating in a war zone for most of that period.

WAPO: No deal reached in U.S.-Canada trade talks as 50 percent tariffs take effect

A potential deal between the U.S. and Canada fell apart Friday, leaving new tariffs to take effect, a move expected to escalate tensions between the Trump administration and America’s northern neighbor.

Beer, cheese and a long list of other Canadian imports become subject to new 50 percent tariffs at midnight Saturday.

Negotiators from the two countries had worked for weeks to reach a deal to avoid the tariffs, which President Donald Trump announced last month. Trump paused the implementation of the tariffs earlier this week as talks continued. But officials said late Friday night that a deal had not been reached and tariffs would go into effect.

Carney didn’t share details of the negotiation.

As bits and bites were leaked it became apparent that it was a crappy deal for Canada with the Auto sector being slowly suffocated and the Dairy Cartel untouched.

Was the negative reaction to the leaks the real reason Carney walked away.

Germany investigates Russia links to weapons cache discovered in woods, reports say

German intelligence believes a cache of guns found in the woods near Berlin last year was for carrying out assassinations on behalf of Russia, reports say.

Germany’s Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said federal prosecutors were investigating a suspect in Romania over suspicions of espionage and “the preparation of a serious act of violence threatening the state”.

While refusing to confirm reports of Russian links to the cache, Dobrindt said he could not rule out “the involvement of foreign powers”.

‘Masha and the Bear’: Ukraine sanctions Russian cartoon

Ukrainian Culture Minister Tetyana Berezhna on Friday said Kyiv had imposed sanctions on the “producers and distributors” of the Russian children’s cartoon series “Masha and the Bear,” or “Masha i Medved” in the original language.

The step will enable Kyiv to seek to remove and demonentize the series on websites like YouTube or streaming services like Netflix in the country.

Shelter-in-place order continues as police search for active shooter in Fort Smith, N.W.T.

The shelter-in-place order in Fort Smith, N.W.T., remains in effect.

Just before 8 a.m. MT RCMP issued an updated alert of the active threat. Fort Smith, Bell Rock and Sawmill island all remain under a shelter-in-place order as police search for the suspect.

Police released an updated photo of the suspect, described as an armed male wearing a grey sweater. Residents are asked to contact police if they have any information. Police have opened a community portal for the public to collect digital evidence from witnesses.

One killed in sword attack at Swedish school

One person has been killed in a sword attack at a high school in central Sweden, authorities have said.

Police were called to the Brinell School in Fagersta shortly after 14:00 local time (13:00 BST) on Friday, where officers arrested an 18-year-old man.

In an update on Friday, police said officers fired at the suspect before arresting and detaining him. He has not been named.

Jewish groups want Ottawa to ban militia allegedly tied to Toronto shootings

U.S. prosecutors say a member of Kata’ib Hezbollah told an undercover officer that his people were behind recent shootings at a Toronto synagogue and the U.S. consulate. The pro-Iran Shia militia based in Iraq is not on Canada’s list of terrorist entities.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs and the Canadian Families of Victims of October 7 want it added, along with Palestine Action Canada and Masar Badil, in a campaign launching Friday on the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism.

None of the three is on the list, which Public Safety Canada last updated July 28.

Canada-U.S. Trade Talks Collapse; Washington Imposes New Tariffs

Crucial trade talks between the United States and Canada to stave off punishing new tariffs by the Trump administration on Canadian goods collapsed late Friday, with Canada saying it would retaliate “dollar for dollar.”

United States trade representative Jamieson Greer told reporters that Canada had walked away from the negotiating table after days of talks had brought them close to an agreement that would avert 50 percent tariffs on more Canadian goods. President Trump had this week repeatedly said that the two countries, locked into a trade war since last year, were very close to a “good deal.”
