Appeals court rules for professor who refused to use transgender student’s preferred pronouns

A federal appeals court on Friday unanimously ruled in favor of a professor who refused to use a transgender student’s preferred pronouns.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit found that Shawnee State University in southern Ohio violated the First Amendment’s free speech and free exercise clauses by punishing Nicholas Meriwether, a philosophy professor, for using a transgender student’s biological pronouns. The ruling reversed a previous district court decision dismissing Meriwether’s claims.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says his government didn’t prepare a fallback plan on implementing a consumer carbon tax because they were hoping to win in the country’s top court.

Kenney said the province was buoyed by a lower court win in Alberta, and noted that three of the nine Supreme Court justices had concerns with Thursday’s majority decision that the tax is onside with the Constitution.

Original assessment of COVID-19 as low-risk wasn’t wrong, Tam says, despite Auditor-General’s report

Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer says her agency wasn’t wrong when it rated the risk of COVID-19 to the country as low in early 2020, a ranking that the federal Auditor-General says was concerning and based on a faulty assessment tool.

At a news conference on Friday, Theresa Tam said the low-risk assessment was to show a moment in time rather than the potential risk the coronavirus posed to Canadians. However, she said her agency is now more focused on its forward-looking risk assessments, rather than only capturing the immediate risk posed by a disease.

“It was not wrong, it’s just that it is important to also provide what that future state might be like,” Dr. Tam said. Public-health agencies, she said, “need to be prediction organizations and not just being able to assess the risk of that present moment.”

Arkansas Governor signs bill banning biological males from girls’ sports amid criticism of it being ‘cruel’ & ‘illegal’

Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson signed into law a bill that bans biological males from competing in female school sports programs, marking the third Republican-controlled state to enact such legislation.

“This law simply says that female athletes should not have to compete in a sport against a student of the male sex when the sport is designed for women’s competition,” Hutchinson said in a statement after signing the bill on Thursday. “As I have stated previously, I agree with the intention of this law. This will help promote and maintain fairness in women’s sporting events.”

After being slapped with a temporary ban from Twitter, 17-year-old Mila — who was forced into hiding in France last year after receiving thousands of death threats for her criticism of Islam — simply wrote, “Hi, I’m back!” after her account was reinstated.

When contacted by Le Point, she said she received no explanation or apology from Twitter.
