After being tortured, starved and dragged through the blood of fellow prisoners, a French war photographer kidnapped by ISIS in Syria back in 2013 said he and other hostages attempted to kill themselves.
‘We found plastic bags and ropes,’ Edouard Elias tested Friday during a federal trial against one of his captors, El Shafee Elsheikh, a former British national who was sitting just a feet away in an Alexandria, Virginia courtroom. ‘We tried to find a way of suicide.’
Elsheikh is accused of leading a kidnapping plot that resulted in the killings of US aid workers Kayla Mueller and Peter Kassig and journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff.

In Germany, they call it “Day X”. Businesses up and down the land are making contingency plans for what is seen as a growing likelihood that Russian gas will stop flowing into Europe’s biggest economy.
“It would be a disaster – one which would have seemed almost unthinkable just two months ago, but which right now feels like a very realistic prospect,” the owner of a hi-tech mechanical engineering company in western Germany said. The firm produces everything from battery cases for electric cars to train clutch systems.
The speaker did not want to be named, or for his company to be identified, in part for fear, he said, of appearing to support Russia’s war by making the case that if the gas is turned off, his century-old business “will likely not survive”. But he says he is in a deep quandary and feeling very vulnerable, as he is not only heavily reliant on gas – the cost of which has already soared – but also on metals such as nickel and aluminium, much of which comes from Russia.
This will test Euro Solidarity.

‘You think I’m stupid enough to kill my reputation just simply to look like a victim?’
Yup.

You would think that by now the brain trust behind the major Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) leadership candidates would have learned that if you betray your base on climate change, you won’t survive long as party leader.

Just when we thought the pandemic was behind us, COVID hysteria is back with a vengeance in Canada, with Ontario standing out once again as uniquely fearful, where the science apparently works differently than everywhere else on the planet. With most Western countries now ditching the last of their COVID-19 restrictions, there is chatter that Ontario ought to reimpose restrictions that were recently lifted, in particular the mask mandate.
The chatter is not merely from those who never saw a government rule or restriction they didn’t like, but from the self-appointed experts who hold forth in the media and social media on the need to tighten restrictions yet again in the face of a sub-variant, in an apparently never ending battle with the virus.

“You can call me Marceline.”
The 83-year-old alleged serial killer who was born Harvey Marcelin but now identifies as a lesbian named Marceline Harvey is quick-witted, flirtatious and sometimes terrifying when explaining her anger management issues — and her two identities — from behind a glass wall at Rikers Island.
“Harvey’s not a good guy, he’s a tough guy,” she said. “Marceline’s nice and gentle and loving, you know, lots of laughter, fun to be with. She’s the one who’s perfectly normal.”

For nearly a dozen days in February, a small group of intelligence officers had been going to bed early.
They had seen the intelligence predicting a war and knew that if Russia was really going to invade Ukraine, it would begin in the early hours of the morning.
But when the news finally came on 24 February, it still felt unreal, one recalls: “It was hard to believe it was actually happening until I woke up early that morning and put the radio on.”
For months they had been sounding the alarm.

Ukraine: Boris Johnson travels to Kyiv for Zelensky talks
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has held talks in Kyiv with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, Downing Street has said.
No 10 said the visit was “show of solidarity” with the Ukrainian people.
A spokesman said Mr Johnson was using the trip to set out a new package of financial and military aid.
It comes the day after the UK announced £100m of weapons for Ukraine after the bombing of refugees at a railway station.

OTTAWA —Canada and the U.S. are in detailed security talks to ensure there’s no repeat of trucker blockades led in part by “right-wing extremists” who “wanted to overthrow the government,” says Washington’s envoy to Canada.
Ambassador David L. Cohen said the blockades, particularly at the Windsor-Detroit border in early February, raised “significant concerns” within the Biden administration and among American manufacturers about the reliability of cross-border supply chains.
Cohen strongly condemned the protests and voiced concerns they could happen again. He also said Canada and U.S. government officials are looking at how to eliminate jurisdictional snafus that complicated law enforcement efforts to stop the blockades, along with measures to tackle the disinformation that fuelled the protests in the first place.

Several of Russia’s top state-controlled nuclear companies stand to gain billions of dollars in revenue as part of a new nuclear accord with Iran that will waive sanctions on these firms so that they can build up Tehran’s nuclear infrastructure, according to a U.S. government-authored document reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon.
Russia’s state-controlled Rosatom energy firm and at least four of its major subsidiaries will receive sanctions waivers under a new accord so that they can complete nuclear projects in Iran worth more than $10 billion, according to the 2019 document, which details all the Russian entities involved in these projects.

The least a president might expect, when juggling a war in Europe with an election at home, is a bounce in the polls.
But Emmanuel Macron has discovered that all the energy he spent dealing with Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine has been of little help in France’s unpredictable vote.
“Nothing is impossible,” President Macron has warned, as polls suggest his far-right rival is closer than ever before to winning the presidency.
A month ago, Marine Le Pen was trailing President Macron by 10 points and fighting for a place in the second round against him.

Those incorrigible Israelis and Palestinian are at it again — “cycle of violence” and all that. Those who did not read past the headline may never find out that the dead Palestinian, one of two, had walked down Dizengoff Street, the city’s most crowded commercial district, indiscriminately shooting people. Two Israelis were murdered, and many others are in serious condition. The attack in Tel Aviv is part of string of deadly attacks, perhaps the beginning of a third Intifada, that includes the recent murder of five people in nearby Bnei Brak.

“I think that I acted properly,” said Irina Gen, a 45-year-old English teacher from Penza, a Volga region city of about half a million people. “I don’t regret it. The only problem is that I didn’t manage to reach the minds of our students.”
Gen is under criminal prosecution for discussing Russia’s war in Ukraine with a group of eighth-graders on March 18. One of the students recorded the conversation and released it publicly, prompting prosecutors to file criminal charges that she disseminated “demonstrably false information about the armed forces of the Russian Federation.”
Specifically, Gen was charged for mentioning Russia’s March 9 air strike on a maternity hospital in the Azov Sea port of Mariupol — an incident that Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) officers who questioned her claimed, without evidence, was “fake.”

I’ve been a car enthusiast for a long time. In my early teens, I would take a bus from my town in the mountains, down to the city. I walked to the avenue where most of the car dealers were. To their chagrin, I would end up with a large collection of their glossy (and for them pricey) auto brochures. I would pore over these with great interest.
In those days, a fast car would run the quarter-mile in roughly 13 to 14 seconds and do 0 to 60 between six and eight seconds. Such a vehicle would need a large 6 to 7l V-8 and with essentially no power accessories or air conditioning.

Welcome to the Woke Inquisition.
The brilliant Nazi-era system of segregating society based on health papers has once again become all the rage. Better yet, modern technology has made it possible to segregate people using digital codes, just like your supermarket organizes products. No need for all that paper anymore! Not only is digital tracking a more efficient way to control people and destroy the world, it’s much greener, too.
