As excitement builds around the world for this year’s FIFA World Cup tournament, residents and small businesses in Canada’s host cities are bracing for daily disruptions that range from inconvenient to possibly dangerous.

Sixteen cities across Canada, Mexico and the U.S. are co-hosting the global soccer tournament. Canada’s cities — Vancouver and Toronto — are home to a combined 13 games, including Team Canada’s opener on Friday.

But as soccer fans descend on Canada’s host cities, residents and community groups are bracing for the complications associated with major events like the FIFA World Cup or the Olympics.

Haji Najibullah appeared unbothered as he walked into Manhattan federal court earlier this week to learn whether he would face life behind bars for his role in brutal violence during his time as a Taliban commander – including the 2008 kidnapping of US journalist David Rohde.

Canada vows to restrict social media for kids under 16. Teens say they’ll ‘always find a way’

Canadian high schoolers have mixed feelings about the Safe Social Media Act (Bill C-34), introduced Wednesday by the federal government.

Key elements of the bill include establishing a new Digital Safety Commission and setting safety criteria and guidelines for social media and AI chatbots, but the element causing the most chatter is a ban on social accounts for kids under 16 (with the potential for exemption for services deemed who’ve put “adequate safeguards” in place).

Teens shared with CBC News their thoughts about a social media ban, while parents expressed guarded optimism moving forward. Here’s what they said this week.

Kids may not be able to read or write but that won’t stop them figuring out a way around the ban.

But kid’s safety isn’t the goal, state surveillance of everyone is.

Hired gunmen in Canada are younger, cheaper, more violent and more plentiful than just a decade ago, organized crime experts say.

Anti-immigrant protesters have clashed with counter-demonstrators in cities across Britain as police battled to contain outbreaks of disorder that left innocent families caught up in violent scenes.

Officers were deployed in force in Liverpool, Glasgow and Brighton on Saturday as rival groups traded insults, scuffled behind police lines and staged competing demonstrations amid mounting tensions on Britain’s streets.

In Liverpool, a major policing operation was launched around County Road as anti-immigration protesters and counter-demonstrators gathered in the Walton area.

A former Department of National Defence executive who was dismissed after criticizing Western leaders’ rhetoric toward the United States is suing the federal government.

Raquel Garbers filed a statement of claim in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Ottawa on June 11. Garbers is seeking roughly $2 million for lost benefits and punitive damages.

“DND deliberately or negligently assisted in destroying Ms. Garbers’ career and well-being as a respected federal executive and defence expert,” the claim says.

Canada has finally begun to acknowledge what millions of Canadians have known for years: immigration levels matter. After bringing in approximately 485,000 permanent residents in 2024, the federal government reduced its targets to 395,000 in 2025 and 380,000 in 2026. Temporary resident numbers have also been cut significantly.

Yet while politicians have become willing to discuss how many immigrants Canada can absorb, they remain remarkably reluctant to discuss a far more important question: who are we admitting, and should cultural compatibility play any role in the answer?

Most Canadians see little benefit from AI at work as concerns over downsides grow

Artificial intelligence may be transforming workplaces across Canada, but many workers say the technology has yet to deliver meaningful improvements to their productivity or the quality of their work, according to new polling data.

How a communal banquet became a battle for the soul of France

ABOUT 3,500 people in Colmar, France, sat down last weekend to eat choucroute, drink wine, and sing the old songs. They wore berets. They broke bread together on long tables. They were loud and happy and French. And the radical left lost its mind.

The company behind the gathering is called Le Canon Francais. For roughly £60 you get four courses of regional food, all the wine you can drink, and several hours of what can only be described as communal joy. The crowd is young, mostly in their 20s and 30s. The songs are old standards by Michel Delpech and Joe Dassin, songs their grandparents loved, and these young people know every word. The phenomenon has swept provincial France, filling hangars and fairgrounds, drawing thousands at a time.
