The actress formerly known as Ellen Page announced that she was changing her name to Elliot in December 2020. Since that announcement, Page has become Hollywood’s most visible transgender celebrity. At the time, she found immediate industry support from the writers of the show The Umbrella Academy, who rewrote her character as trans mid-series. But she hasn’t landed a post-switch role in a big tentpole film until now, with her casting in Christopher Nolan’s forthcoming Odyssey.

The Great Palestinian Election Scam

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has once again announced legislative and presidential elections, presenting the move as evidence of democratic renewal. According to a presidential decree issued on July 9, legislative elections are scheduled for November 28, 2026, while presidential elections are to follow during the first quarter of 2027. The decree calls on Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Jerusalem to participate in “free and direct” elections aimed at strengthening democracy.

Western governments and donors will undoubtedly welcome the announcement as a sign that Abbas is finally responding to long-standing demands for reform. They should not.

Nearly 80 per cent of Canada’s past year job gains were in one province: Alberta

Alberta is home to roughly 12 per cent of Canada’s population, but it accounted for close to 80 per cent of all the jobs the national economy created in the past year, according to Statistics Canada.

Alberta added nearly 80,000 jobs in the past 12 months, while all of Canada added 99,000, the national agency said in its latest jobs report.

Alberta’s total looms large partly because it kept hiring while some of the country’s biggest provinces shed workers.

Two teens arrested after five members of family killed in Illinois shooting

Two teenagers were arrested Sunday in connection with a “targeted mass shooting” that killed five members of the same family and wounded two others in East St Louis, Illinois, according to state police.

The 15- and 16-year-old suspects were taken into custody at Holten State Park, a recreation area east of the city, Illinois state police director Brendan Kelly said at a Sunday news conference – but they had not immediately been formally charged with a crime.

“These alleged acts of horrific violence, taking this number of lives, here in this community, it’s terrible, it’s evil, but it will not keep this city down,” Kelly said.
