When explaining why trade talks between Canada and the United States collapsed in late August, Prime Minister Mark Carney often cites the U.S. team’s shifting and last-minute demands. Those mattered, to be sure. But what he doesn’t mention is equally important.
In a 2,700-word address on Aug. 22 explaining why we’re in a trade war, Mr. Carney never said the word “China.” In his Sept. 8 Forward Guidance video, he mentioned it once, observing that an Alberta farm can now get better prices for its canola “because our trade diversification opens opportunities with China.” That was the deal he negotiated in January in Beijing, with the benefit emphasized and the price tag removed.

Canadians know how it feels to be hit by U.S. tariffs. But Canada hasn’t been subjected to Washington’s more aggressive tactics such as trade sanctions and asset freezes.

Or rather, most Canadians haven’t.

Judge Kimberly Prost, a Canadian jurist who serves on the International Criminal Court, is the exception. She found her credit cards cancelled, her Google accounts closed and was effectively “de-banked” after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared the court “an instrument for lawfare against the United States and our close ally Israel.”

Many unidentified flying objects, or what the government calls “unidentified anomalous phenomena,” are balloons, satellites, birds, or things otherwise explainable. Balloons and satellites account for nearly 85% of the objects in the Pentagon’s resolved UFO investigations. Some UFOs are also undisclosed aircraft belonging to secret military or intelligence units, Russia, or China — the Washington Examiner reported in 2023 on China’s use of drones to spy on U.S. military training areas.

Nevertheless, as I’ve argued previously, a small subset of UFOs is very likely the construct of a highly advanced nonhuman intelligence.

Liberals and the foreign policy establishment scoffed at President Trump when he bluntly announced that he was reviving the Monroe Doctrine to enhance U.S. hemispheric security. In their view, the Monroe Doctrine was an anachronism that belonged to earlier periods of American history. The Obama administration announced in 2013, in Secretary of State John Kerry’s phrase, that “the era of the Monroe Doctrine is over.” Late last year, American Enterprise Institute Senior Fellow Michael Rubin called Trump’s revival of the Doctrine “dangerous,” explaining that “globalization moots the Monroe Doctrine.” Ed Kilgore in New York magazine echoed Rubin’s sentiments. Stewart Patrick, senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, wrote that Trump’s approach to the Western Hemisphere is “counterproductive to U.S. foreign policy and the global order.” Other “experts” have called it shortsighted, a return of U.S. imperialism, and a gift to China.

More than two in three Canadians back EU associate membership: poll

OTTAWA — Canadians overwhelmingly support Canada becoming an associate member of the European Union, a new poll suggests — even though the details of that arrangement haven’t been finalized.

The online poll by Leger, conducted between Sept. 19 and Sept. 21, suggests 70 per cent of Canadians support the idea, 18 per cent are unsure and 13 per cent oppose it.

But the poll suggests Canadians draw the line at changing some laws in order to align with Europe.
