After graduating from university in the early 1980s, I decided to discover my Caribbean roots and apply for a job as a teacher in Jamaica. My school was nestled in the heart of rural Jamaica, and my students were fantastic.

I arrived during an interesting transition. Jamaican children up until that time had exclusively followed the British curriculum. The region had rightly decided to develop a syllabus that better reflected its own history, culture and local context.

But even after that, it was an education system that was firmly rooted in a British tradition, and Shakespeare was compulsory.

There are now roughly 30.4 million unmarried American men between the ages of 20 and 39, nearly twice the number of married men in the same cohort. The predictable explanation is that men are to blame. Pornography, gaming, delayed adulthood, declining ambition, fear of commitment, social awkwardness, the manosphere, and economic stagnation all make the list of reasons. But after years of dissecting so-called “toxic masculinity,” perhaps it is time to ask what has toxic femininity done to the modern woman? Have women today become poor prospects for marriage?

When I teach self-defense, I explain that the attacker has an enormous advantage before the first punch is thrown. He knows his intentions, has selected his target, and has already decided what he’s prepared to do. His victim may still be trying to understand what’s happening.

The attacker is already acting while the defender is only beginning to observe.

It’s official: Canada’s race-based sentencing regime applies to Māori New Zealanders — and it’s so powerful that it can shave what should be a seven-year sentence down to one, and protect offenders from being publicly identified.

We learned this from a B.C. meth-trafficking case that was published Friday . It arose from a bust that happened at the Vancouver International Airport back in February 2025, in which a Māori-Tongan woman was intercepted in her attempt to fly 20 kilograms of methamphetamine back to Auckland in her suitcase. In Canada, if sold by the kilo, it was worth between $80,000 and $90,000; in New Zealand, it was worth at least four times that.

A man has been arrested in Pakistan for allegedly marrying off his three-year-old daughter to a 60-year-old man for less than £7,000.

Police said that Abdul Baqi, from the border city of Chaman in Balochistan, sold his young daughter to the man, named locally as Salah Uddin, in exchange for 2.5million Pakistani rupees (£6,802), according to the BBC.

The exchange was carried out as part of ‘walwar’, an outdated tradition that sees a male partner’s family give the family of a woman money in exchange for her hand in marriage.

After a 20-year-old Italian citizen of Egyptian origin allegedly raped a 12-year-old boy, the child’s relatives used convenience store surveillance footage to identify the suspect and later stabbed him in the legs. The Egyptian-Italian suspect was arrested and confessed to sexually assaulting the boy in a public park in Turin’s northern outskirts, authorities said.

I don’t think they were going for his legs.

When explaining why trade talks between Canada and the United States collapsed in late August, Prime Minister Mark Carney often cites the U.S. team’s shifting and last-minute demands. Those mattered, to be sure. But what he doesn’t mention is equally important.
In a 2,700-word address on Aug. 22 explaining why we’re in a trade war, Mr. Carney never said the word “China.” In his Sept. 8 Forward Guidance video, he mentioned it once, observing that an Alberta farm can now get better prices for its canola “because our trade diversification opens opportunities with China.” That was the deal he negotiated in January in Beijing, with the benefit emphasized and the price tag removed.
