The Liberal government is running perilously low on money.

The spring economic update celebrated a deficit lower than had been projected but still contained a fiscal shortfall that can only be called massive. This likely inspired the government to pitch the notion of privatizing Canada’s airports for the second time in a year. Funds from the sale of airport infrastructure could be used to reduce government debt or to add to the planned sovereign wealth fund. Nearly 20 percent of the world’s airports are privately owned, and it comes with risks and benefits.

There were several rounds of chatter over the summer and into the fall about whether the honeymoon was over for Prime Minister Mark Carney – and if not yet, when that moment would come.

Elbows sagged; President Donald Trump went on blowing up like a puffer fish; tariffs were carving up certain sectors of the economy and regions of the country; CUSMA hadn’t been rescued; the only shovels in the ground on major projects would have been digging anyway; groceries, gas and mortgage payments were still gouging.

It isn’t about the Honeymoon, it’s about his voters holding their breath in the hope they pass out before having to admit they made a horrific mistake that has created a lost generation of Canada’s youth.

It has been declared a terrorist incident, based on the targeted anti-Semitic nature of the attack. Although an Iran-linked group has claimed responsibility, officers have said there is no evidence linking the suspect to any proscribed organisation or extremist group. A ‘British’ Somalian, Essa Suleiman, 45, has been charged with attempted murder. Meanwhile, the official response from those running the country has been the same linguistic dance of Tiptoe Through the Tulips we have witnessed ever since October 7, 2023.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says the prime minister has “wasted an entire year” deliberating a potential new oil pipeline out of Alberta — criticism that comes after Mark Carney said a new pipeline is “more probable than possible.”

“He’s been prime minister for a year and he still hasn’t even made up his mind whether he supports a pipeline,” Poilievre told reporters at a news conference in Toronto on Sunday morning. “He’s wasted an entire year.”

Carney is waiting for the the deal that best suits China.

He was found guilty yesterday at the Old Bailey of preparation of terrorist acts and two offences of possession of a bladed article in a public place. On 28 April last year, he travelled across London to the Israeli embassy in Kensington, wrapped his head and face in a red-and-white shemagh, put on sunglasses, armed himself with two knives, and tried to climb the perimeter fence. Armed diplomatic protection officers stopped him within seconds.

That was the whole grand operation. An hour of theatrical pilgrimage through London, a martyrdom note, two knives, a costume, a fence, and then the ground.

Much has been said since March about how Avi Lewis has finally and fully landed in the family business, following in the footsteps of his father, Stephen, and his grandfather, David, who also were leaders for the New Democrats.

But Lewis has always been in a family business. His mother, Michele Landsberg, wrote for this paper for more than 25 years, and journalism runs in Lewis’s blood as much as politics. It was his first career and many people still know him from his broadcasting days, hosting the CBC TV show Counterspin and farther back, on City TV in Toronto.

Toronto is up to the challenge. There is no bottom to this town’s stupid.

Last year, I supported the Conservatives in the federal election because the Liberal government of the previous 10 years had produced large net capital outflows, presided over Canada’s decline in the rankings of the most prosperous countries per capita, conducted a suicidal war on the petroleum industry, self-defamed the country for attempted genocide of First Nations, was a useless member of the western alliance and did not deserve a fourth consecutive term in office. I had seen Mark Carney as a central banker in Canada, where he was a scene-stealer when the prime minister, Stephen Harper, and the finance minister, Jim Flaherty, guided us through the 2008 financial crisis. I also saw him in the United Kingdom, where, as governor of the Bank of England, he had plunged the bank into absurd controversies about global warming and parroted the Cameron government’s nonsense about Europe. His successor has renounced his dire predictions of the consequences of Britain withdrawing from the European Union.
