Canada barely checks cargo leaving its Pacific ports, a gap a new report says traffickers exploit to ship methamphetamine to Australia by the tonne.
The paper, released by the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, argues that Vancouver and Prince Rupert move enormous volumes of cargo with little of it meaningfully checked and that no single agency is responsible for closing the gap.
Dowry deaths in India no longer provoke the public anger they once did, despite thousands of women’s lives still being lost every year, according to new research.
The killings – women who are murdered or driven to suicide following dowry disputes between families – have also faded from political debate, despite an increase in cases.
In 2022, there were 6,516 dowry deaths in India compared with 1,841 in 1988, according to the paper.
Last week, Alberta’s top court ruled that a deaf man who never learned to communicate can’t be tried for sex crimes, or even assessed for mental fitness to stand trial, because it would violate his Charter rights. After months of protesting outside Queen’s Park, hundreds of applicants who say they were wrongly caught up in Ontario’s crackdown on immigration fraud are taking their fight to court.
A panel of three judges is scheduled to hear a judicial review on July 8 involving applicants whose Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) applications were returned last year. Donald Trump has declared that the ceasefire with Iran is over as he arrived at the Nato summit in Ankara, launching an angry broadside in which he complained about the military alliance and repeated his demand for Greenland.
The US president, sitting alongside the Nato secretary general, Mark Rutte, called Iran’s leadership scum and “sick people”, and added that he was “very upset” with the alliance and even threatened to cut off all trade with Spain in a row over defence spending.

Three arrests have been made in Canada as part of a sweeping international crackdown on an organized crime group — one U.S. authorities say was linked to the killing of a B.C. Sikh activist, a crime that sparked an international uproar.
The Lawrence Bishnoi group was hit with a combined 24 arrests during what authorities called “Operation Hard Ball,” based in Canada, the U.S. and Europe, authorities announced on Tuesday.
Some of the alleged crimes involved shipping drugs into Ontario and the RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency have identified Peel region alongside B.C. as primary hubs for Bishnoi’s violence.
