New Democrats are calling on the federal government to recognize what happened at residential schools as genocide.
In a motion to be tabled in the House of Commons tomorrow [Thursday], NDP MP Leah Gazan is asking fellow lawmakers to unanimously deem the institutions’ history as the deliberate, systemic destruction of a cultural group.
Ahead of the NDP’s weekend convention, Alberta’s Opposition leader has committed to transforming the province’s energy sector and moving the province’s electricity grid to net-zero by 2035 should an orange crush wash over Alberta in the next election.
In a letter to the Speaker on Monday, Singh said questions need to be asked about the Kamloops residential school and other schools, and immediate concrete measures need to be taken.
“This discovery of these children last week is a sad reminder of Canada’s genocidal actions against Indigenous peoples,” Singh wrote to the Speaker of the House in a letter on Monday.

Federal NDP convention delegates are sifting through more than 500 resolutions over the long weekend to decide how to chart the party’s path forward.
Delegates will have 24 hours to prioritize the resolutions on April 6 — just three days before the virtual convention kicks off.
The policy resolution titled “Elimination of the Canadian Armed Forces” was submitted by the party’s Spadina-Fort York Electoral District Association (EDA).
It claims that “in a world with a globalized economy traditional militaries are becoming increasingly unnecessary” and points to other countries like Costa Rica and Iceland which have allegedly “abolished their armies.”

New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh says he does not agree with accusations that Quebecers are racist after one of his MPs applauded controversial remarks by a University of Ottawa professor.
Nonetheless, Singh said NDP lawmaker Matthew Green, who is Black, has the right to express himself as a racialized Canadian and that every province and territory continues to struggle with systemic racism.
Imagine the MSM’s coordinated outrage if a conservative said this.
