Governor General Mary Simon says that while she thinks the way catering expenses for her trip to the Middle East in March were portrayed in the media was “unfair,” a review is underway to minimize the cost of future voyages.
“I don’t even know what the orders are for meals. But I do know one thing — our meals are not very extravagant on these trips. They’re pretty much like airline meals and the way they were portrayed in the media was pretty unfair, I thought,” Simon said in an interview on CBC’s The House airing Saturday.

OTTAWA – Internal documents show the RCMP refused to release the badge numbers of officers who cleared “Freedom Convoy” protesters from the Ambassador Bridge last winter, citing a risk of violence from their supporters.
The situation was detailed in a briefing note and threat assessment prepared for RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki, who was asked to approve the decision because the force recognized it raised questions around transparency.

Records show an RCMP blacklist of bank account holders identified as part of the Freedom Convoy movement was sent by email to lobbyists, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.
… The records show the RCMP distributed names, birth dates, phone numbers and more by unencrypted email and neither police nor Cabinet ensured the blacklist was accurate or confidential.
The federal government is aiming to create a program that will provide a path to permanent residency for up to 500,000 immigrants who are working in Canada but do not have official standing.
The program would have unprecedented scope and apply to people whose visa or work permits had expired, and to those whose refugee applications may have been denied or blocked due to a moratorium on deportations to their country, according to Radio-Canada.
“We’re looking into ways to regularize people who live in Canada with a precarious status,” a government source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Radio-Canada.

During a top court hearing Thursday marked by several sharp exchanges, Justices Malcolm Rowe and Russell Brown challenged lawyers who want them to strike down a Canada-U.S. deal that recognizes the U.S. as a “safe country” and returns thousands of asylum seekers to the American system.

OTTAWA – Federal workers are increasingly cynical, skeptical and disillusioned about the idea of reporting wrongdoing in the public service, says a recent survey.
That pessimism is more “palpable and widespread” now than it was before the pandemic, and bureaucrats have become more likely to fear reprisals for whistleblowing.
Research firm Phoenix Strategic Perspectives Inc. delivered the report in March to the Office of the Public Sector Integrity Commissioner, which investigates serious abuses within the federal government.
Just who exactly is a public service union whistleblower expected to tattle to? Canada’s public service unions and the Liberal government are in bed together. Trudeau feathers their nest and they watch his back and faithfully vote in return.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson’s office would not return a call from the Parliamentary Protective Service during the height of the “Freedom Convoy,” its acting director told a committee Thursday evening.
Larry Brookson, the acting director of the service, told members of Parliament and senators during a joint committee hearing that he attempted to reach out to Watson and Ottawa’s city manager during the protests that occupied downtown Ottawa for three weeks in February.
Cutting government spending is almost always beneficial but new Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s proposal to eliminate the CBC’s public funding is doubly so. Many other government-run institutions are so blatantly inefficient and do so badly that there is at least the silver lining that they sow public skepticism about further government expansion. The CBC is also inefficient and does badly but it is in the business of pushing stories and promoting ideas, and the ideas it promotes are those favouring government expansion. As Milton Friedman wrote, “Any institution will tend to express its own values and its own ideas … A socialist institution will teach socialist values.”
How many times have we heard conservative politicians rally the faithful with cries of “Defund The CBC?” Yet it never comes to pass. Why is that?
The CBC was once vital to maintaining the façade of democracy that kept we proles in check.
CBC became part of the permanent political class that governs us.
But few watch it anymore if the ratings are to be believed.
Trudeau’s handlers understood the CBC’s diminished reach and brought the rest of Canada’s media on board with subsidies’.
Will Poilievre defund or even cut back the CBC? We’ll see but I wouldn’t bet on it.
And I will want to know why he changed his mind.
OTTAWA – Nearly 90 per cent of federal public sector executives, as well as thousands of other federal bureaucrats, went home with $190 million in total bonuses in 2021-2022.
The bonuses represent an 11 per cent jump from the previous year ($171 million), which coincided with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In China, the high-profile TV drama In The Name Of The People has become a smash hit. In that show, Chinese agents enter the U.S. posing as businessmen so they can repatriate a factory manager who had fled abroad with huge ill-gotten wealth.
