The MP to mayor pipeline: Why so many provincial and federal politicians are heading to city hall

Poke your head into any city hall across the country, and there’s a chance you’ll find a former MP or member of the provincial legislature sitting in the mayor’s chair.

Recent municipal elections in B.C., Ontario and Manitoba saw scores of seasoned politicians making the jump — or the return — to the local level.

Andrea Horwath is among them. The former Ontario NDP leader is the newly elected mayor of Hamilton, Ont.

­”Certainly I had accomplishments that really did affect all of Ontario, as an opposition leader,” she told CBC Radio’s The House. ­”But the municipal order of government really is the closest to the people.”

What horseshit. They’re Lifestyle Politicians leveraging whatever name recognition they may hold into yet another chance at the Public Tit. Tory was reelected with 29% voter turnout. It doesn’t take much to cross the goal line in municipal politics.

It’s what they do because it’s lucrative and feeds their sense of self-importance and entitlement.

We need term limits and reduced benefits.

MPs back motion calling on government to recognize residential schools program as genocide

Members of Parliament gave unanimous consent Thursday in favour of a motion calling on the federal government to recognize Canada’s residential schools as genocide.

Leah Gazan, the NDP member of Parliament for Winnipeg Centre, introduced the motion following Question Period Thursday afternoon. Gazan brought forward a similar motion in June last year, but it did not receive unanimous consent.

That sets a pretty low bar.

Auditor General Says $500M in Overpayments to Civil Servants Needs to Be Collected before time runs out

… Meanwhile, more than $500 million in overpayments were made to more than 100,000 employees, some dating back more than three years.

If the government doesn’t collect those overpayments soon, the auditor says, it may run out of time to use some recovery mechanisms because of legal limitations.

Chinese police operatives operating in Canada, U.S. says in new court filing

A recently unsealed indictment in the United States alleges that Beijing’s overseas campaign to put pressure on Chinese nationals to return and face criminal charges in the People’s Republic China includes enforcement efforts on Canadian soil.

These U.S. accusations have come to light about six weeks after Spain-based human rights group Safeguard Defenders alleged three of China’s more than 50 overseas police stations are operating in Toronto. China’s embassy in Canada has denied this.

Once again foreign nations, in this case Spain and the USA , are the source of information Canadians were in the dark about.

Emergencies Act Inquiry to hear CSIS evidence on ‘Freedom Convoy’ in secret

OTTAWA—A judge leading the federal inquiry into the Liberal government’s use of a special emergency law to end the ‘Freedom Convoy’ protests has agreed to hear evidence from Canada’s spy agency at a secret hearing.

In a ruling made public late Wednesday, Justice Paul Rouleau said the federal government asked for a secret hearing — behind closed doors and without other parties present — in order for his commission counsel to examine employees of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service on evidence related to the convoy protest that the agency claims is classified.

It all centres around evidence not yet tabled at the inquiry. And it is unclear what is the subject of the CSIS intelligence that the spy agency wants to protect.

What do they have to hide?

Food bank usage across Canada hit all-time high in March: report

The number of people using food banks across the country surged to an all-time high earlier this year, with high inflation and low social assistance rates cited as key factors in the rise, a new report from Food Banks Canada indicates.

The annual report released Thursday said there were nearly 1.5 million visits to food banks in March, a figure that was 15 per cent higher than the number of visits in the same month last year and 35 per cent higher than visits in March 2019, before the pandemic hit.

Bank of Canada raises rate by 50 basis points, predicts potential recession in the first half of 2023

OTTAWA – The Bank of Canada has raised its overnight rate to 3.75 per cent from 3.25 per cent. Since March, the central bank has increased its policy rate six times, aimed at tackling inflation and bringing it back to its 2 per cent target.

The bank predicts Canada could see a potential recession in the first half of 2023, according to its latest Monetary Policy Report.

“GDP growth is then projected to slow to between 0 per cent and 0.5 per cent through the end of 2022 and the first half of 2023,” reads the report. “This suggests that a couple of quarters with growth slightly below zero is just as likely as a couple of quarters with small positive growth.”

So let’s get this straight.

The economy has ground to a halt, and Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem is raising rates anyway —and quite aggressively.

The central bank released its new projections for the Canadian economy on Wednesday morning, and while it didn’t quite call “recession,” the new numbers for economic activity have been revised down to show basically no growth right now and in the near future.

Not least, and being from Newfoundland, I like to point out how many people from my province—when it was reeling from the fishery collapse—found jobs and relief in Fort McMurray and allied projects in Alberta. One province helping another. I can’t think of a better model for a country built on mutual interdependence, which is why it’s styled a Confederation.

One hotel room cost $6,000 per night and the total cost of hotels for Queen Elizabeth’s funeral is more than many Canadians spent for their house, according to bills paid by the federal government.

Everyone knew the bill for the Canadian delegation attending the Queen’s funeral last month would be steep, but the king’s ransom paid out is still shocking.

Canada’s competition watchdog to investigate grocery industry in wake of soaring food prices

Canada’s competition watchdog is launching a study of the grocery industry to examine whether the highly concentrated sector is contributing to rising food costs.

“With inflation on the rise, Canadian consumers have seen their purchasing power decline,” the Competition Bureau said in a news release Monday.

“This is especially true when buying groceries. In fact, grocery prices in Canada are increasing at the fastest rate seen in 40 years.”

The government is largely responsible for inflation, are they suggesting we should trust the Liberals to investigate themselves?

Trudeau’s pandemic hiring boom adds billions to federal payroll & shores up predatory public service union electoral support for Liberal party

A pandemic-fuelled hiring spree has grown the federal civil service by more than 35,000 people since April 2020, according to a CBC News analysis, helping add billions to Ottawa’s payroll costs.

Figures supplied by the Treasury Board and other ministries and departments show the federal government added 19,151 jobs in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2021, and another 16,356 positions in fiscal 2022. All told, the feds now employ 335,957 people across the country: a 12 per cent increase from pre-COVID times, and the greatest number of public servants in Canadian history.

An additional 28,176 bureaucrats were on long-term leave in 2022, not receiving their full salaries, but many of whom remain eligible for taxpayer-funded top-ups, benefits, insurance and pension contributions.

Watson Told Trudeau Convoy Protesters Were ‘Nasty’ and Un-Canadian: Phone Call

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson told Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a phone call that the Freedom Convoy protesters were “nasty people” that don’t represent the country, saying they remind him of the Republican Party, documents presented at the inquiry into the use of the Emergencies Act show. His comments were shown at the inquiry on Oct. 18, where he later denied to the convoy protesters’ lawyer that he had politicized the protests.

“A challenge for everyone. Still a pretty unstable situation. Nasty people out there that just don’t represent Canada,” Watson told Trudeau on Feb. 8, according to a transcript presented at the public inquiry into the federal government’s use of the Emergencies Act, as first reported by Blacklock’s Reporter.

Our political class lives in a bubble without contact to Canadians.

Chrystia Freeland is right to condemn doing business with dictators. Will Trudeau listen?

There were a couple of things that were quite striking about Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland’s clarion call at a Brookings Institution forum last week where she called for a radical dismantling of the global trade paradigm that Russia and China have lately proved so successful in subverting by coercion, blackmail and war.
