Conservative MPs have asked Canada’s public safety committee to reconvene to probe how a Toronto man arrested last week for allegedly plotting an ISIS attack in the U.S. got into the country.
The four Conservative members of the committee want it to meet immediately to hear from Immigration Minister Marc Miller, Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Canadian Jewish groups.
LETHBRIDGE — Alberta Justice David Labrenz on Monday sentenced Chris Carbert to 6 1/2 years in prison for mischief and obstruction and Anthony Olienick to 6 years for the same charges, plus possession of an explosive weapon.
Olienick and Carbert were convicted last month of public mischief over $5,000 and possessing a firearm dangerous to the public peace. Olienick was also convicted of possessing a pipe bomb.

Kehillat Beth Israel Congregation in Ottawa has invited former J-Space president and leftist “anti-racism expert” Karen Mock to speak about antisemitism. J-Space is the Canadian counterpart to J-Street in the U.S. The announcement was circulated in a newsletter by the organization Israel Now, which was founded by Meir Weinstein, former Canadian national director of the Jewish Defense League.

It makes for grim reading, the criminal complaint filed by a federal prosecutor in New York City, ripe with details about a thwarted plot by a devotee of the Islamic State group to massacre Jews after slipping across the border from Canada.
Alarming content in the wake of another recent arrest — an accused Egyptian-born father and son terrorist combo — allegedly conspiring to slaughter civilians in Toronto, in the service of Islamic State. A father who somehow managed to slither through security screening, claiming asylum, granted a visa, then permanent residency status, then Canadian citizenship (in May) before a gruesome video surfaced of the now 62-year-old Ahmed Fouad Mostafa Eldidi allegedly dismembering a prisoner with a sword.
Nearly two-thirds of Canadians show some level of support for Ottawa’s plan to add a 100-per-cent tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles, a new poll has found.
The survey by Nanos Research for The Globe and Mail found 43 per cent of Canadians say they support the tariff, while 20 per cent say they somewhat support the measure.
Ten per cent of respondents polled said they oppose the tariff and 17 per cent said they somewhat oppose it.
Federal officials have declined to answer questions about the immigration status of Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, citing privacy laws, and said only that they are reviewing how he came to Canada.
Bellevue House has regrettably become one more battlefield in the Liberal government’s endless war on Canada’s past. It also reveals the apparent requirement under the Trudeau government’s reconciliation policy that indigenous opinion be inserted into all possible government activities and institutions, regardless of relevance or factual accuracy. It makes for a rather odd visitor experience.
Niagara Regional Police said officers were called to a home in the area of Beaver Glen and Brookside Drs. on Wednesday around the noon hour for the possible presence of a suspicious device.
“During the initial search of the home, officers located multiple devices of a concerning nature,” police said in a news release.

Canada’s economy has fallen behind its population growth for the fifth straight quarter, with real GDP per capita declining by 0.1 percent in Q2 2024, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada released last week.
Compared to the same period last year, per capita GDP is now down 2.2 percent. Compared to 2022, it’s down 3.6 percent. As RBC analysts correctly noted, this is a “recession-like” performance.
This downturn becomes even more striking when viewed in comparison to the United States, which continues to see gains.

In one, people hope to catch a glimpse of a star. In another, people wait for food.
