Sri Lanka Arrests Top Muslim Leader Over 2019 Easter Attacks

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA – Sri Lankan police on Saturday arrested a prominent Muslim lawmaker and his brother over suspected connections to the Easter Sunday suicide bombings in 2019 that killed 269 people.

Rishad Bathiudeen is a former Cabinet minister who currently leads an opposition party in Sri Lanka’s Parliament. He and his brother, Reyaj Bathiudeen, were arrested in the capital for allegedly “aiding and abetting the suicide bombers who committed the Easter Sunday carnage,” said police spokesman Ajith Rohana. He said the brothers had not yet been officially charged but were arrested based on direct evidence, as well as what he called circumstantial and “scientific” evidence.

Norwegian City Aims to Ban the Naming of New Streets After Men in a Bid to Reach Equality

Bergen City Council aims to pass a decision that that no new streets, squares or municipal facilities will be named after men until the gender balance has changed significantly.

The way things are now, about 90 percent of the streets are named after men, while only 10 percent of the streets are named after women, which is a problem, according to City Councillor for Culture, Diversity and Gender Equality Katrine Nødtvedt of the Greens.

Growing Calls for Moving or Boycotting the Beijing Olympics

A growing number of Western lawmakers and human rights groups are calling for a boycott of the next Winter Olympics, set to take place in Beijing in February 2022.

The calls for a boycott have come in response to burgeoning evidence of human rights abuses against Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang, a remote autonomous region in northwestern China. Human rights experts say that at least one million Muslims are being detained in hundreds of internment camps, where they are subject to torture, mass rapes, forced labor and sterilizations.

Anger is also simmering over China’s political repression in Hong Kong, Tibet and Inner Mongolia; its increased intimidation of Taiwan; its threats to its other neighbors; as well as its continued lack of transparency over the origins of the Coronavirus pandemic, which has resulted in the deaths of more than three million people around the world, according Johns Hopkins University.

Protests in France as man who killed Jewish woman avoids trial

Thousands of protesters have rallied in Paris and across France after the killer of a Jewish woman was declared unfit to stand trial because he was judged to have suffered a psychotic episode caused by cannabis use.

Kobili Traoré is accused of beating 65-year-old Lucie Attal – better known as Sarah Halimi – and throwing her from the balcony her Paris apartment in 2017.

French courts have recognised the killing as an antisemitic crime but declared that 32-year-old Traoré, currently in a psychiatric hospital, could not be tried as he was in the grip of a drug-induced “delusional fit” and not in control of his actions.

It’s the Oscars 2021 – but how many people have seen the main films?

It’s Hollywood’s biggest night on Sunday – the Oscars – when stars are anointed and future classics crowned. Except this year the pandemic, and a longer-term trend away from mass-market movies, mean the nominated films have struggled to cut through.

In case it passed you by, the leading contender for the Academy Awards this year with 10 nominations – four more than any other film – is Mank, Netflix’s black-and-white homage to old Hollywood, starring Gary Oldman as Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman J Mankiewicz.

It’s a movie about the making of one of the greatest movies ever made – the type of film the Oscars like, even if others are less keen.

Documents obtained by The Mail on Sunday reveal that a nationwide scheme, directed by a leading state body, was launched nine years ago to discover new viruses and detect the ‘dark matter’ of biology involved in spreading diseases.

One leading Chinese scientist, who published the first genetic sequence of the Covid-19 virus in January last year, found 143 new diseases in the first three years of the project alone.

Ontario reports 3,947 new Covid cases … and … Your Hot Dog Holder will be late for delivery

For the third time over the past week, Ontario is reporting fewer than 4,000 new COVID-19 cases today.

Provincial health officials logged 3,947 new cases of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus today, down from 4,094 on Saturday and 4505 on Friday.

The rolling seven-day average is now 4,017, down from 4,341 one week ago.

BRAMPTON — Gigantic Amazon corporation is the first target of Peel Public Health’s new policy to shut down businesses with more than five COVID-19 cases to control outbreaks.

Using Section 22 powers, Peel Public Health announced at noon that sections of two Amazon Fulfillment Centres have been ordered closed. Calling it “partial” closures these measures affect the Amazon operations at 8050 Heritage Rd. in Brampton and 12724 Coleraine Dr. in Bolton.
