Beyond tariffs: 5 worrying ways Trump could escalate his trade war with Canada

Beyond tariffs: 5 worrying ways Trump could escalate his trade war with Canada

For much of the past year, the Canada-U.S. trade war has been measured in tariff rates.

On Sept. 8, that started to change.

As President Donald Trump escalated his latest round of measures against Canada, his administration did more than raise duties. The White House directed the U.S. trade representative and the General Services Administration to remove Canadian-origin products from federal procurement schedules that manage more than $50 billion USD in government purchasing. On the same day, Trump also moved to ban certain Canadian products from entering the U.S. altogether, rather than simply subjecting them to higher tariffs.

Germany: AfD proposes ‘deportation police’ before regional election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the eastern German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is campaigning on a dedicated “deportation police” unit.

Two days before the Sept. 20 state election, the party’s platform calls for a “border and deportation” police to be created explicitly to return foreigners. The new unit would be created inside the state police.

NEMETH: A return to colony status — Carney’s EU ‘associate membership’ would crush Canadian sovereignty

NEMETH: A return to colony status — Carney’s EU ‘associate membership’ would crush Canadian sovereignty

Mark Carney’s speech to the European Parliament should set off alarm bells across Canada, and the West in particular. In it, Carney praised the European Union’s (EU) power to impose rules and standards “that the world frequently adopts,” otherwise known as the “Brussels Effect.” While intended as a compliment, Alberta and Saskatchewan should hear it as a threat and ask: Is closer integration necessary, and what are its implications?

But it would be good for Carney.

The Fall of California

The Fall of California

While California is the fifth-largest economy in the world, its days of being a business haven have long passed. More and more, companies big and small are forced to either shut down or move to a more business-friendly state. Take, for instance, the departure of Fortune 1000 companies like Tesla, Oracle, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, or a recent survey of CEOs ranking California as the worst state in which to do business. Things have gotten so bad that even providers of critical municipal services have been forced to stop doing business in the state. And in Los Angeles, the city may soon become a giant Skid Row, a dumping ground in every way.

The UK must heed Mark Carney’s EU red-carpet embrace

The UK must heed Mark Carney’s EU red-carpet embrace

Mark Carney is back in the news as the ubiquitous champion of the old, rules-based international order.

Building on a speech he made in Davos earlier this year to the effect that “middle” powers should huddle together for warmth in an era dominated by superpower rivalry, he sought this week to further cosy up to the EU as an alternative to increasingly hostile relations with Trump’s America.

It’s fair to say that the Canadian prime minister’s speech to the European parliament was more important for its political signalling than its real-world economic significance. Ever since Trump made Canada the butt end of his war on international trade, Carney has ridden a wave of offended Canadian patriotism.

Canada’s car theft crisis was fuelled by tech. Now it’s powered by rocks and violence

Canada’s car theft crisis was fuelled by tech. Now it’s powered by rocks and violence

With the grace of a major league pitcher, Naz Tokhi’s partner-in-crime plants his feet, transfers his weight back, then explodes forward with a snap of his right arm, firing a carefully selected rock through the glass of a front door. He reaches in, turns the lock, and both men enter the Toronto home, running shoes crunching over shattered glass.

Tokhi’s goal is to obtain the car keys belonging to a $140,000 BMW parked in a Toronto driveway. He will do this 10 times over a span of two months. When he is caught, he will be released on bail, then allegedly go back to stealing cars. The vehicles he and his crew take are worth between $80,000 and $200,000.

Sounds like bad immigration policy.

‘We are not alone:’ Coalition of UFO whistleblowers call on Trump to let them publicly reveal secrets

The world’s most prominent UFO whistleblowers have formed an unprecedented coalition to ask President Trump to waive their government nondisclosure agreements — which they say are preventing them from sharing what they know about extraterrestrial life with the American public.

Dylan Borland, David Grusch and Matthew Brown say they accumulated the information while working in highly classified government programs and are legally barred from discussing it publicly without White House intervention.

Warship commander says ‘the global order is changing’ as Canada expands presence in Arctic

NEAR CAMBRIDGE BAY, NTV. – Delivered to the Royal Canadian Navy last summer, HMCS Robert Hampton Gray is the newest Arctic and offshore patrol vessel helping bolster Canada’s presence in the North.

On a brisk September day near Cambridge Bay, Nvt., during Operation Arctic Ghost with the Canadian Coast Guard and the RCMP, Cmdr. Brian Henwood surveys the bridge of the ship like an officer exactly where he wants to be.

“I mean, this is our territory. These are our Arctic waters,” Henwood told CTV News. “Having our ships here, patrolling and making sure people aren’t coming through without our permission is critical.”

But …

Canada’s Harry DeWolf-class Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) are frequently critiqued by defense analysts as being designed to “patrol, but not to fight.” The phrase “told to run from conflict” stems from the reality of the ships’ highly limited armament and construction standards, which make them unequipped to handle peer-to-peer naval engagements

President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu: Trying to Prevent the Takeover of Western Civilization

What Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald J. Trump have been doing is not just battling terrorist groups; they have been preventing these groups from achieving their main goal: taking over Western civilization.

The core ideology of groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis — like the Iranian regime — is not influence, trade or partnerships; it is ideological dominance. Their efforts actually center on trying to destroy all non-Muslims, as well as other Muslims that each group considers not Muslim enough.

Hamed Shafia devout Muslim convicted in Canada’s most infamous honour killings granted absence from prison

In the time leading up to the murder of his sisters and stepmother, Hamed Shafia quashed his remorse by telling himself he had no choice and was simply going along with his father’s actions, he told a parole hearing Friday.

In reality, he was doing more than simply going along with it, said Shafia, who was 18 at the time of the killings. “I was aiding him in doing these things,” he said.

“So it was this back and forth in my mind, this game I was playing between moral obligation and then this whole notion that, ‘OK, I have to go through with it, this is honour,’ and all of that stuff.”

The twin sisters facing the wrath of Iran’s crackdown

The twin sisters facing the wrath of Iran’s crackdown

Taraneh Rahimi was staying with friends on the night of Jan. 24 when masked, armed men barged into the house, put a bag over her head and took her away. They later came for her twin sister, Romina.

For months after that, their loved ones didn’t know where they were, or whether they were even alive. Their mother searched for her 20-year-old daughters everywhere, begging staff at hospitals, in courts and outside prisons for information about them, to no avail.
