CHARLEBOIS: Ottawa cut the diesel tax, but your grocery bill will still go up

CHARLEBOIS: Ottawa cut the diesel tax, but your grocery bill will still go up

Food does not move by magic. In Canada, it moves largely by diesel.

Diesel powers tractors and combines. It carries ingredients to processors, distribution centres and refrigerated loads to restaurants and grocers. It supports fishing, storage and last-mile delivery. When diesel rises sharply, the food system is not hit once. The shock travels through the chain several times before reaching consumers.

Caribbean to train children as reparations activists against Britain

Caribbean to train children as reparations activists against Britain

Caribbean countries will teach children to be activists so they can claim reparations from Britain for generations.

Mia Mottley, the prime minister of Barbados, has hosted a conference over the past week to discuss strategies for obtaining compensation for slavery.

Government-backed experts have devised an “action plan”, which includes training children to continue the dispute with former colonial powers for decades to come.

Canadian pride and rage in the face of tariff madness

Canadian pride and rage in the face of tariff madness

In the early days of the world’s stupidest trade war, outsiders seemed impressed, amused and somehow surprised when Canada pushed back by yanking American booze from our stores, booing The Star-Spangled Banner and dishing out retaliatory tariffs.

The same punchline kept surfacing online and among late-night TV hosts: “Do you know how obnoxious you have to be to tick off the Canadians?” Because everyone knows that Canadians are docile, polite and self-effacing, basically the world’s stuffed animals.

The Globe is still pushing the Carney line. It’s a lie, Carney sabotaged the talks to further his agenda.

Meloni plans to ban burqas and niqabs in Italian schools and cap foreign students in classrooms

ROME (AP) — Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Sunday she’ll soon introduce a measure to her government that would cap the number of foreign students in classrooms and ban the wearing of burqas and niqabs in schools.

Meloni told the youth wing of her nationalist conservative Brothers of Italy party that the measure would also make Italian language lessons compulsory for parents of foreign students having “serious difficulties integrating into the school system.”

Alto’s future is the same as Canada’s future. Both will fail.

Alto’s future is the same as Canada’s future. Both will fail.

Canada does not have the engineering and manufacturing expertise to build Alto. Therefore, Canada also does not have the expertise to supervise the building of Alto.

Instead of developing a domestic capacity for high-speed train technology and manufacturing, as an essential all-sectors nation-building exercise, Canada will contract external (Western globalist) capacity; and everyone will be paid off, financiers first, all the way down to every deficient but obedient careerist civil servant.

‘We hit the floor’: Belleville, Ont., synagogue leader recounts shooting that left police officer, man injured

‘We hit the floor’: Belleville, Ont., synagogue leader recounts shooting that left police officer, man injured

Around 7 p.m. on Sunday evening, Sons of Jacob Synagogue president Norman Weddum was ushering people into the Belleville, Ont., sanctuary to begin services for Yom Kippur when he heard shots ring out.

“It was boom, boom, boom,” Weddum told CBC News Network on Monday.

The exchange of gunfire outside the synagogue in the southern Ontario community left a man and a police officer wounded, authorities say. The 29-year-old man was hospitalized in life-threatening condition. The officer is in critical but stable condition.

The media and police are not providing much detail. Sounds targeted however.

Alberta Judge Overturns Cancellation of Academic’s Talk on ‘Woke-ism’ at University of Lethbridge

An Alberta judge has overturned a 2023 decision by the University of Lethbridge to cancel a scheduled lecture by former Mount Royal University professor Frances Widdowson.

In his Sept. 17 decision, Justice Christopher Simard of the Alberta Court of King’s Bench found that the university failed to properly take into account Widdowson’s Charter right to free expression when it cancelled her talk entitled “How Woke-ism Threatens Academic Freedom.”

Should Canada apply to become the 28th member state of the European Union?

Should Canada apply to become the 28th member state of the European Union?

A growing number of Canadians are contemplating what once seemed unthinkable — abandoning North American free-trade agreements and joining the European Union.

McGill University’s Maria Popova is urging Canada to seek European Union membership to counter U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to Canadian sovereignty. Popova, an Associate Professor of Political Science and Scientific Director of Montreal’s Jean Monnet Centre, spoke with former federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau. Morneau, who played a key role in Canada’s 2017 USMCA negotiations — the trade deal between the United States, Mexico, and Canada — believes that strong relations with the United States are vital to Canadian prosperity.

Protesters march in town after former military base is turned into asylum camp housing 540 male migrants

Protesters marched in town today after a former training camp started being used as a temporary accommodation site for asylum seekers.

A camp for 350 migrants in Crowborough, Sussex, is already up and running despite fierce local objection over resident safety, strain on resources and the scale of the site – with plans to increase its capacity to 540.

Huge crowds of residents gathered today holding banners that read ‘Crowborough says no’, while counter demonstrators also turned up raising signs saying ‘migrants welcome’, ‘kindness is our strength’ and ‘stronger together’.

Conrad Eder: Does the government prioritize hiring competent workers?

Conrad Eder: Does the government prioritize hiring competent workers?

Two candidates pass each other in a corridor: one is heading into a job interview; the other has just finished. Neither will be evaluated merely by ability, education and experience. Who gets the job will also depend on skin colour, gender and other factors of group identity. This is Canada’s federal public service, today.

A new study by the Aristotle Foundation reviewed 301 federal job postings across 59 departments, agencies and Crown corporations. Forty-two per cent prioritized, or potentially prioritized, applicants based on identity characteristics, while 4 per cent restricted, or potentially restricted, a candidate’s eligibility on the same basis.
