Poilievre Says Canadian Flag Should Not Be Replaced by Other Flags in Public Spaces
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says Canadian flags should not be removed and replaced with other flags, after he was asked about a school’s decision to fly a Pride flag in place of the national flag during the month of June.
“When I’m prime minister, we will fly the Canadian flag everywhere and always. We should never take down the Canadian flag for any reason. We have to be united now more than ever,” Poilievre told reporters in Vancouver on June 19.

The story is all too predictable. What could anyone have expected when women in Afghanistan, of all places, decided to take to the streets to protest the Taliban’s Islamic dress code? The South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP) reported recently that “on June 9, at least two people, including a woman and a child, were killed and many others wounded after Taliban opened fire on protesters in Herat city of Herat Province, reports Amu TV. The violence erupted after residents took to the streets to protest the detention of women and girls accused of violating the Taliban’s dress code.”

Having spent the last two weeks vacationing in Maine, I had the dubious pleasure of cognitive proximity to the successful bloom of Graham Platner mania. Platner is the “dude-bro” Maine Democrats are putting their money on for the Senate midterm win. The alleged philandering, women-bullying, military-comrade insulting, AR-15-owning, F-word-spewing, fake working class populist with no political experience won 72 per cent of the vote.
Andrew Stiles of the Washington Free Beacon described Platner as “a bearded scumbag with a Nazi tattoo and a vanity oyster farm.” (Most, if not all, of his oysters go to his mom’s restaurant.) Stiles reminds us that Platner has also fantasized about raping burglars to show dominance (“not in a gay way,” you understand) and admitted to masturbating in porta-potties. There’s more, but I have other points to make and breakfast to keep down.

They bring to mind the theme of science-fiction classics like Steven Spielberg’s ET. Now, though, amid the fanfare surrounding his new film, Departure Day, Spielberg himself has said he believes that aliens exist.
So do I, though I’m sceptical of Spielberg’s belief that we’ve been visited here on Earth. Proclamations of UFO sightings, abductions, and so forth never seem convincing.

In the United Kingdom, a contested 2025 report—whose methodology has since been seriously questioned—claims a fourfold increase in 18-34-year-olds attending church at least once a month, with 20% of young men under 34 regularly attending compared to just 4% six years ago.
Yet, it is still hard to deny an interest in Christianity and a—very quiet—revival. At Easter 2026, 21,000 adults and young people were baptised in France, a 20% increase compared to 2025, which already saw a 32% rise in baptisms compared to the year before. For comparison, in 2021 there were around 4,100 adult baptisms.

Apolitical crisis is unfolding in the small Dutch town of Maassluis, a former fishing village which sits between Rotterdam’s vast port and industrial complex, the glasshouses of the agribusiness powerhouse known as the Westland, and the historic fishing town of Vlaardingen.
The natives of Maassluis were once nicknamed ‘snails’. They acquired the name in the 1770s, when the parliament of the Dutch Republic decreed that Psalms should be sung at a faster tempo in church. The citizens of Maassluis and Vlaardingen refused to comply, continuing – like snails – to sing at the slower pace that had been customary for more than two centuries, dating back to the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule. A minority, reportedly from the local elite, embraced the new rules and began singing more briskly, resulting in chaotic Sunday services in Dutch Reformed churches across the region.
