Germany is quietly falling apart

In Germany, the trains have stopped running on time, bridges have been shut over safety fears, and the country’s largest carmaker, Volkswagen, is cutting a sixth of its workforce. The government’s response amounts to a shrug, dressed up as reform. It seems like Germany is on a bad streak – and the AfD looks set to reap the rewards.

Take the railways, the infamous Deutsche Bahn. A few weeks ago, they ground to a total halt. Every train in the country stood still, because the radio system that lets drivers talk to signal boxes – a system that appears to date, in spirit if not in silicon, from the Kaiserreich – simply stopped working. For several hours, nothing moved on the tracks of Europe’s largest economy.

Don’t need them, don’t want them

After months of protesting outside Queen’s Park, hundreds of applicants who say they were wrongly caught up in Ontario’s crackdown on immigration fraud are taking their fight to court.

A panel of three judges is scheduled to hear a judicial review on July 8 involving applicants whose Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) applications were returned last year. The applicants argue the province unfairly grouped legitimate workers with fraudulent applications by returning thousands of files without individually assessing them.

Several people were wounded and a suspect was arrested in an apparent violent attack at a secondary school in the southern German state of Bavaria on Wednesday, police said.

‘A suspected perpetrator has been arrested,’ local police confirmed in a post on X.

‘The number of people involved and the severity of the injuries are currently being clarified.’

Update: Perp is Croatian background, was in psychiatric care and may be an ex-student of the school

Three Canadians named in international crackdown on ‘thugs’ running Indian prison-based crime group

Three arrests have been made in Canada as part of a sweeping international crackdown on an organized crime group — one U.S. authorities say was linked to the killing of a B.C. Sikh activist, a crime that sparked an international uproar.

The Lawrence Bishnoi group was hit with a combined 24 arrests during what authorities called “Operation Hard Ball,” based in Canada, the U.S. and Europe, authorities announced on Tuesday.

Some of the alleged crimes involved shipping drugs into Ontario and the RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency have identified Peel region alongside B.C. as primary hubs for Bishnoi’s violence.

Police across Europe had been hunting for the ‘armed and dangerous’ 39-year-old Berezovska, a Ukrainian national who speaks German, after she was identified as the prime suspect in a Red Notice by Interpol – the international police organisation.

More Canadians are turning to buy now, pay later as grocery costs soar

Canadians are increasingly financing daily expenses through instalment loans as food prices continue to strain household budgets, according to a new report.

Data from Toronto-based fintech Koho Financial Inc. released Tuesday showed that use of its buy now, pay later financing option surged 109 per cent over the past year, growing from 0.8 per cent of users in May, 2025, to 1.71 per cent in May of this year. For perspective, Koho has more than 2.5 million customers across Canada.

Twenty-one-year-old Mohamed Ilyes Akodad was in court to be sentenced; he had already pleaded guilty to firebombing a synagogue and Jewish community centre. Yet he insisted to the judge that he had no idea the buildings were Jewish. Instead, Akodad and his lawyer Nazar Saaty claimed he was simply carrying out a paid “three barbecues” contract on unknown locations, arranged through Signal and FaceTime. Akodad told the court that the job came after he attended a party with a friend he refused to name at a place he claimed he could not remember due to stress and drug use.

Few subjects in Canada generate more passion than the question of who built this country. Unfortunately, the discussion often begins with conclusions rather than evidence. Political advocacy, media narratives, educational institutions, and activist organizations frequently present simplified versions of history that emphasize one set of contributions while minimizing another. The result is not greater understanding but greater division.
