Canada joining international program to build next generation of fighter jets

Defence Minister David McGuinty is expected to announce next week in the United Kingdom that Canada will play a role in an international program to build the next generation of stealth fighter jets, CBC News has learned.

Canada has reached a deal to join the Global Combat Air Program as an “observer,” Canadian government sources said.

The U.K., Japan and Italy are all partners in the multibillion-dollar program to develop and build the sixth-generation fighter jet by 2035.

A committee led by Mayor Olivia Chow is likely to sign off on a 40-year lease for Toronto’s WNBA team, which would pay $1 a year for a parcel of land the city may value at $10 million – or more.

A report, prepared for Chow’s powerful executive committee by the heads of City Hall’s parks and recreation division and its corporate real estate management arm, recommends the Toronto Tempo be given a city-owned surface parking lot at 701 Fleet St.– located northeast of Strachan Ave. and Lake Shore Blvd. W. – to turn into a practice facility.

So the city is giving a 40 year sweetheart lease to a league that won’t last 5 years (That’s the upside) and tax payers lose 500K a year in parking fees in exchange for 800K in operating expenses.

Deutsche Bahn, Germany’s state-owned railway operator, appears to be facing a growing sabotage problem.

According to a leaked internal report, the company recorded around 2,200 cases of sabotage targeting railway infrastructure during the first six months of 2026, a 7% increase compared with the same period last year.

The incidents include arson, vandalism, and theft that causes significant damage to railway infrastructure and disrupts train services, costing taxpayers increasing amounts to repair each year.

OTTAWA — Canada won’t share toll revenues from the Gordie Howe International Bridge with the United States until the project’s debts are repaid, with Prime Minister Mark Carney stating on Thursday that the $6.4-billion crossing may run operating losses in its early years.

“It’s not splitting the tolls at the bridge. It is an agreement for 15 years to split net revenues,” Carney said at a news conference in London, Ont. “Any sharing of the toll revenue won’t happen until all of the debt is repaid.
