Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has developed a reputation for delivering the Trump administration’s message with an unusually eloquent, and frequently sarcastic, edge, and Canada was the latest target.
In a CNBC interview Monday, Bessent laughed off the idea that Ottawa could meaningfully pressure the United States as the two countries escalate their trade war. The exchange came just a week after Washington and Ottawa imposed 50 percent tariffs on one another following failed negotiations to come to a trade agreement the Trump administration found satisfactory.

Joe Biden practically built his entire 2020 campaign on that same premise, insisting that the election came down to character, and that Trump simply didn’t have it.
OTTAWA — U.S President Donald Trump’s Republican Party has revoked the CBC/Radio-Canada’s press access to its upcoming midterm convention, citing the public broadcaster’s now-reversed policy not to refer to 9/11 as “terrorism” without direct attribution, National Post has learned.
A CBC spokesperson confirmed Monday that the Republican National Convention (RNC) had revoked access for both CBC and Radio-Canada to its major party gathering on Sept. 9 and 10, ahead of key mid-term elections.

Doubling down, the leader yelled, “Let them know we are taking over New York” as the frenzied mob belted out, “Allahu Akbar.” Do you think they’re serious? If not, you ‘ve got a “stuck-on-stupid” card.
An American corporate executive who married my Montreal cousin decades ago always insisted that Canada in time would be absorbed by the U.S. It was inevitable, he said. The most powerful nation in the world would be hungry for all our northern resources and Canada would be powerless to fight back.
If the negotiating terms the Trump team recently offered Canada is anything to go by, Trump would seem to hold a similar view today.
Egypt is reportedly preparing to host another round of talks between the Palestinian factions, including Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s ruling Fatah faction and the Iran-backed Hamas terrorist group.
The stated goal sounds appealing: achieving Palestinian “national unity.”

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada is under attack, bombarded by U.S. tariffs and a trade partner that moves goalposts on a whim.
The federal government’s initial response was to offer short-term support payments for companies and workers hit by this latest round of American tariffs.
A UN committee has said countries are legally obliged to consider reparations for the transatlantic slave trade and take other measures to address the enduring legacy of racial discrimination.
Guidance published on Monday by the committee on the elimination of racial discrimination (CERD) said the obligations arose from a legally binding 1965 convention on racial discrimination, not from the legal standards that existed when the slave trade took place.
The committee described the approach as a “paradigm shift” away from debates over historical responsibility that have often been used by governments to resist reparations claims.

The Carney government’s approval rating is strong. But our new analysis suggests that strength rests on a much narrower foundation than the topline number implies.
